Planning and Zoning commissioners deal with
Expo expansion
By ANTHONY WILSON /Staff Writer
Planning and Zoning commissioners on Monday abandoned a stretch
of road to accommodate more Expo Center expansion despite one
woman's complaints it will inconvenience her.
When the city abandons the eastern 1,066 feet of Lytle Way
in August, Marilu Corpian will have to drive an extra four-tenths
of a mile to get from her house to Play Street. Her husband, Gary
Corpian, hinted his wife may sue the city and county over the
matter.
County commissioners sought the thoroughfare abandonment so
they someday can make maximum use of the recently purchased 25
acres south of the Taylor County Coliseum. The current expansion
project doesn't include plans for the acreage.
Though County Judge Lee Hamilton acknowledged Mrs. Corpian
will be inconvenienced, he argued the action was in the best interest
of the "vast majority" of county residents. Any delay
would jeopardize plans to finish work on Play Street before football
season and the West Texas Fair, he added.
"Time is of the essence," Hamilton said.
The Corpians will still have access to Play Street once it
is extended to Loop 322 this summer. The loop's frontage roads
also will remain two-way for at least 15 years, providing easy
access, a highway department official assured.
But the couple wanted more time to negotiate a possible sale
of their property to the county.
"It'll be a big chunk out of her property," Mr. Corpian
said of possible effects on values. "She's gonna be the big
loser, and everyone else will be the winner."
Hamilton said the Commissioners Court and the Corpians have
exchanged several offers and counter-offers for the property,
which he admitted the county doesn't need. Still, he said he expects
an agreement will be reached.
