Abilene relief workers head to Jarrell
By ANISSA CAMP / Abilene Reporter-News
Abilene relief workers are in Jarrell to provide assistance
to tornado victims.
Russ Brown and Ronnie Skaggs from the Abilene chapter of the
American Red Cross left Wednesday morning in an Emergency Response
Vehicle for the devastated Central Texas community. The ERV is
designed to transport food to victims at their homes or at shelters
providing two meals a day.
Brown, chapter executive director, will be there for at least
two weeks. Skaggs, a Red Cross volunteer, will remain for three
weeks or until he is no longer needed, according to Joan Kinter,
disaster director.
Other Abilene volunteers have been put on alert by the national
Red Cross office in Houston in case they are needed. The Salvation
Army is standing by, also.
Donations by check can be sent to either the American Red Cross
- Big Country Regional Chapter, 1610 N. 2nd, Abilene 79601, or
The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 6929, Abilene 79608. Checks to the
Red Cross may be designated either Jarrell or Cedar Park Disaster
Fund. Checks to the Salvation Army should specify Tornado Disaster.
"The reason we need money and not food or clothes is that
we don't have the resources to transport food and clothing,"
Kinter said.
According to the Red Cross, a secure credit card donation can
also be made through the Red Cross web site at http://www.redcross.org.
