Izzard fails to file finance reports on time
By RICHARD HORN / Abilene Reporter-News
Though he's been raising and spending money for a rematch,
Republican congressional candidate Rudy Izzard hasn't been filing
required campaign finance reports on time.
Izzard said Monday he's had computer problems that are now
solved.
He was six months late filing a report covering the final days
of the 1996 campaign. The Federal Elections Commission sent him
notice his report was late on Dec. 23, and Izzard didn't file
it until May 16.
A year-end report was due Jan. 31. On Feb. 23, the FEC sent
Izzard another letter urging him to file that report, as well.
Izzard said he recently sent the report and the FEC should have
received it by now.
A spokeswoman in Washington said it was not in the file Tuesday,
though she said it's possible it's being processed elsewhere in
the office.
"We've been in close contact with them and they've been
very flexible with us," said Izzard, who narrowly lost to
Democrat incumbent Charles Stenholm last year and is running again
next fall.
He announced this spring he was beginning to raise money to
challenge Stenholm again. Last week, he mailed out a large color
flier titled, "Why Rudy Izzard will <I>defeat<I>
Charlie Stenholm in 1998."
Another report, covering the first six months of 1997, which
should include all Izzard's fundraising and spending in preparation
for the upcoming race, is due Thursday. Izzard said he should
make that deadline.
"We had some computer problems and had to reconstruct
some files and wanted to make sure the reports we sent in were
accurate and complete, and I think they appreciated that,"
Izzard said.
"The CPA who handles my filing advised them early on we
would be a little late and we wanted to make sure things were
accurate," he said. "Things got very hurried at the
end of the campaign."
On his latest report filed with the FEC, covering the end of
the last campaign, Izzard listed $63,332 in contributions, $129,425
in expenditures and $79,073 owed by his campaign committee.
Stenholm's latest filing, the year-end report for 1996, listed
$1,655 in contributions, $23,699 in expenses and $55,982 cash
on hand. The report for the first six months of 1997, due Thursday,
had not been filed as of Tuesday, an FEC spokeswoman said.
