Gorman police chief asked to improve performance
By BOB BRUCE / Abilene Reporter-News
GORMAN -- Police Chief Joe Simpson has been placed on probation
by the Gorman City Council until Sept. 30.
Mayor Jack Simpson, no relation, said Wednesday that council
members are seeking an improvement in Joe Simpson's performance
as police chief.
The chief was informed of the probation following a unanimous
vote by the council last Thursday, according to the mayor.
"We just felt like we weren't getting the job done we
were hoping for," the mayor said. "He's still serving,
he's still active on duty. We're hoping to seen an improvement
in performance."
Asked if council members are confident that will occur, the
mayor replied, "We'll just have to see."
Mayor Simpson said the chief moved to Gorman from Coleman a
couple of years ago, heading a two-member police force.
"Then we use some reserves along to fill in for their
days off," the mayor said.
The mayor was asked if the council's action was prompted by
something specific.
"Nothing specific. There was just a feeling among the
council," he said.
The chief was informed of the council's vote by Councilman
Robert Ervin, who serves as police and fire commissioner, according
to the mayor.
The mayor said he does not know how the chief reacted to the
vote.
Chief Simpson was not immediately available for comment.
The Gorman council is made up of four members and the mayor.
