Abilene lawyer to head state bar section
By RICHARD HORN / Abilene Reporter-News
Abilene attorney Beverly Tarpley will be installed Saturday
as head of the American Bar Association's section of Legal Education
and Admissions to the Bar.
The section council is designated by the U.S. Department of
Education as the only accrediting agency for American law schools.
She has been a member of the council since 1990 and has served
on accreditation teams making inspection visits to various law
schools around the country and American programs in Europe and
South America.
"I really enjoy it and find it very satisfying,"
she said. "I get a kick out of getting back in law school
campuses, sitting in classes, talking to the students, visiting
with the faculty."
Tarpley apparently is the first Abilene attorney to head one
of the ABA's sections. She will become chairwoman during the ABA's
annual meeting beginning Thursday in San Francisco.
She has been a member of the ABA's House of Delegates for four
years. She was also appointed to its specialization committee
and a panel working out issues to blend the North American Free
Trade Agreement into the legal professions of Canada, Mexico and
the United States.
She served as chair of the National Conference of Bar Examiners
in 1992-93 after serving on its board since 1975.
Tarpley came to Abilene in 1951, directly from the University
of Texas Law School. Her entire practice has been in the Scarborough
firm, where she is now "of counsel," limiting her practice
to mediation and selected cases.
Her husband, Dick, is former editor of the <I>Reporter-News<I>.
