Cooper teacher resigns
By JONATHAN KRYDER / Abilene Reporter-News
A Cooper High School teacher resigned after an allegation was
made that he improperly touched a female, a school official said.
Mark Castillo, a biology teacher and assistant football coach,
submitted his resignation to school officials Tuesday.
Abilene trustee Valree Brailsford said he was told by the school
administation an allegation had been made that Castillo "touched
(a female) in the wrong place."
Superintendent Charles Hundley cited "personal reasons"
as the official cause.
When asked if the resignation warrants the filing of a report
with the State Board for Educators Certification, Hundley said
he "would need to check and see." By law, districts
must report any matters pertaining to teacher misconduct to the
SBEC.
He said the district "would comply with the law"
if the matter warrants a state report.
Attorney Maggie Montelongo, director of investigations and
enforcement for the SBEC, said no report by the district had been
filed with her office as of Wednesday afternoon. She said some
districts wait until their boards officially accept such resignations
before filing.
Abilene board vice president John Stearns said board members
have not met to discuss the matter.
"We've just been notified of it," he said Wednesday
evening.
Personal matters involving district employees are usually discussed
by the board in closed executive sessions. Stearns said if Castillo's
resignation warrants a special meeting, the board probably will
conduct it during the next regularly scheduled meeting in November.
Castillo could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
