Watt Matthews and employee in stable condition

ALBANY - Famed rancher Watt Matthews and an employee both were listed in stable condition Wednesday, six days after they were injured in a one-vehicle rollover on Matthews' ranch.

Matthews, 98, is in Stephens Memorial Hospital in Breckenridge. He suffered three broken ribs, plus cuts and bruises.

His attendant, Barbara Ledbetter, was moved out of the surgical intensive care unit at University Medical Center in Lubbock and into a private room.

Friends said she will not require surgery for a fracture in her spine. She is being fitted for a back and neck brace that will immobilize the spine, and is due to return home in a few days.

Ledbetter was driving Matthews' Ford Explorer when it went out of control on a bumpy ranch road.
