Old Settlers gather in Buffalo Gap
By JOHN STARBUCK
Staff Writer
BUFFALO GAP - The 76th Taylor County Old Settlers Reunion provided
something for everyone Saturday, from playing dominos or "42"
to sitting under the oak trees reminiscing with friends.
Just before taking his seat for a game of "42," Sheridan
Olson of Lueders, a former dominos champ at the Old Settlers Reunion,
said playing dominos was a family affair when he was growing up.
"My folks played; we all played," Olson said. "At
night, when it was dark, we'd have domino parties and all that."
The game of matching the correct ends of dominos doesn't require
as much brainpower as other games.
"There's some luck in this. I mean checkers and chess is
strictly a skill. It's just what you pick up," said Olson.
Another Texas Midwest resident who preferred to mingle with others
instead of taking part in any activities was Fred Perry of the
Merkel area, who said he has attended nearly every one of these
reunions.
In the early days,he said, Perry and his parents would load up
in a Model T Ford and make their way from the west end of the
county to Buffalo Gap. Upon arriving, they usually encountered
many visitors drawn by the chance to have some good food and fellowship.
"There were three times as (many) as there is today,"
Perry said. "They were like I was; they didn't (do) much,
and when they got the chance to go to a picnic, well they went."
