Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Louis Ray Cervantes
Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Louis Ray Cervantes, 56, died Thursday
in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Ava Berry
officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery.
Mr. Cervantes was born in Riverside, Calif., and was a Green
Beret. He served in Vietnam and Panama with Special Services,
and moved to Abilene in 1983 from Fort Benton, Ga. He retired
as a sergeant major after a 29-year career with the U.S. Army
and worked with the ROTC program at Hardin-Simmons University.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also
was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include a longtime companion, Judy Griffin; two sons,
Angel Louis Cervantes of Mesa, Ariz., and David Cervantes of Minnesota;
his parents, Baulio Joe Cervantes and Mary Gonzales, both of California;
two brothers, Roger Cervantes of Biloxi, Miss., and Rudolph Cervantes
of California; and two grandchildren.
The Rev. John Waldren
The Rev. John W. Waldren, 74, of Brownfield and formerly of
Abilene, died Tuesday in a Lubbock hospital.
Services were held Friday in First Foursquare Church in Brownfield
with the Rev. Eugene Staton officiating. Graveside services will
be at 11:30 a.m. today in Buffalo Gap Cemetery, directed by Head
Family Funeral Home of Brownfield.
Rev. Waldren was born in Cushing, Okla., and served with the
U.S. Army during World War II. He married his wife in 1948 in
California and worked as a carpenter. He was a retired minister,
having lived and ministered in Abilene for 35 years before moving
to Brownfield in 1985. He was a member of American Legion Post
269 and First Foursquare Church in Brownfield.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Waldren of Brownfield; one
son, Raymond Waldren of Plano; and two grandchildren.
Diana Lee Frizzell
SWEETWATER - Diana Lee Frizzell, 28, died Thursday in an Abilene
hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel
of Memories with the Rev. Jay Simpson officiating. Burial will
be in Sweetwater Cemetery.
Mrs. Frizzell was born in Sweetwater, where she married Jerry
Frizzell Jr. in 1987. She was a homemaker and was a member of
Highland Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Sweetwater; two daughters,
Jordee Frizzell and Halee Frizzell, both of Sweetwater; her mother
and stepfather, Patsy and Johnny Maki of Sweetwater; her father
and stepmother, Preston and Laverne Alston of Sweetwater; three
sisters, Debbie Doty, Dana Martin and Denni Alston, all of Abilene;
her grandfather, Virgil Heath of Sweetwater; and her great-grandmother,
Cora Mott of Tyronza, Ark.
Anna Lou Davis
WINTERS - Anna Lou Davis, 63, of Perry, N.Y., died Tuesday
in a Warsaw, N.Y. hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in Winters Funeral Home Chapel
with the Rev. Jack Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Northview
Cemetery.
Mrs. Davis was born in San Antonio, where she lived most of
her life. She married James Davis in 1956 in San Antonio and worked
as a nurse. She moved to New York in 1987.
Survivors include her husband, of Perry, N.Y.; four sons, Larry
W. Hulo of Rockingham, N.C., James A. Davis Jr. of Greigsville,
N.Y., Richard A. Davis Sr. of Perry, N.Y., and David M. Davis
of Leicester, N.Y.; three daughters, Linda Ann Martin and Catherine
Martin, both of San Antonio, and Deborah Lynn Davis of Perry,
N.Y.; four sisters, Wanda Ruth Heristen of Burkburnett, Doris
Childress of Ruther Glenn, Va., Lonnie V. Janszen of San Antonio
and Geraldine Strickland of Houston; 32 grandchildren; and 18
great-grandchildren.
Frances Morton
Frances A. Morton died Friday in a local nursing home. Services
are pending with North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Dale Guinn Little
Dale Guinn Little, 57, died Friday at his home. Services are
pending with Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.
B.B. Hurst
B.B. Hurst, 86, of Dallas and formerly of Abilene, died Friday
at his home. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home,
5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South.
Maggie Mae Green
GOLDTHWAITE - Maggie Mae Green, formerly of Center City, died
Friday in a Liberty hospital. Services are pending with Stacy-Wilkins
Funeral Home.
John Carlisle
CLEBURNE - John L. Carlisle, 87, formerly of Dublin, died Thursday
at his home. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in
Dublin Liveoak Cemetery in Dublin, directed by Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield
Funeral Home.
Claude Williams
MULLIN - Claude Williams died Thursday in Lamesa. Services
will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel
in Goldthwaite.
Howard Warford
BAIRD - Howard Warford, 87, of Yountville, Calif., died Tuesday
in Yountville. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Parker Funeral
Home Chapel. The body will arrive at the funeral home this evening.
Leo Moats
RANGER - Leo Moats, 92, died Thursday in an Abilene hospital.
Private graveside services will be today in Merriman Cemetery,
directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Joe Atkins
BRECKENRIDGE - Joe E. Atkins, 64, died Thursday in Abilene.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Breckenridge Cemetery,
directed by Morehart Mortuary.
Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Oscar Meade Sherwood
MORGAN MILL - Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Oscar Meade
Sherwood, 76, died Thursday at his home. Services will be at 2
p.m. today in Lacy Funeral Home Chapel in Stephenville.
John Marvin Harris
BROWNWOOD - John Marvin Harris, 69, owner and operator of the
Harris Rating System that rates football teams, died Thursday
at his home. Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. today in Heartland
Funeral Home Chapel in Early. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday
in the funeral home.
