Challenge of academics

With all the time television devotes to sports, it's no wonder our high school student athletes receive more attention than those who concentrate on academics.

And while the labor of the mind is less exciting to watch than feats of the body, KTXS-TV has devised a format that makes academic excellence entertaining for spectators and furnishes recognition to youngsters already well on their way to becoming storehouses of knowledge.

Today at 6:30 p.m., McMurry University will be the site for the final match of KTXS' annual Academic Challenge between four-person teams from Wylie and Breckenridge high schools, which arrived at this point from a field of 32 teams that began competition in the fall. The match will be aired live on KTXS channel 12/channel 4 on Abilene cable.

It's only a game, not an ultimate test of intellectual superiority. But our young scholars are worth the attention, and for TV viewers, it's a nice change of pace from the ball game routine.
