An animal worth seeing
With the long Memorial Day weekend approaching, signaling the
end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation, our
thoughts naturally turn to leisure activities to fill the days.
Watching the Abilene Prairie Dogs is a logical choice, but our
Texas-Louisiana team doesn't play at home until a week from today.
And there are other breeds of animals worth seeing.
The Abilene Zoo has a new featured guest - Copan, the zoo's
7-month-old black jaguar, now frolicking on exhibit from 9 a.m.-noon
every day in the jaguar area. In the afternoon, the zoo's 2-year-old
spotted jaguar, Wailer, takes Copan's place in the exhibit's lineup.
Both are from the same jaguar parents, though obviously from different
litters.
These creatures are definitely worth the trip to Nelson Park,
and this weekend marks the beginning of the zoo's expanded hours
for the season. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the zoo is open from
9 a.m.-7 p.m. Admission is only $3 for adults and $2 for seniors
and children 3-12.
Everybody should take the chance to see Copan this summer while
he's such a playful cub.
