In the national arena
Abilene takes its place on the national stage today in a most
appropriate fashion, as local Make A Difference Day coordinator
Janet Ardoyno joins 300 other delegates assembled from all over
the country in the three-day Presidents' Summit for America's
Future in Philadelphia.
Given our community's record of nationwide recognition for
volunteerism and of inspiring and helping larger Texas cities
who want to emulate our success, Abilene rightfully belongs in
this national forum.
And Ardoyno is the proper choice, not for personal recognition,
but as a community representative who will have a lot to contribute
to others and a lot to bring home for us.
Initially, Texas delegates were chosen only from bigger cities,
thus excluding Abilene. But numerous local forces mounted a lobbying
campaign that finally convinced conference officials to make room
for Ardoyno. She says the deciding factor was the work of Rep.
Charles Stenholm and his staff in Abilene and Washington.
We're sure Janet will have much to share when she gets home.
