Slice way out of bounds

Fuzzy Zoeller should have known better.

Even if the popular golf pro was only joking, he should have realized how it would sound in a national TV interview to refer to Masters champion Tiger Woods as "that little boy" and urge him not to ask for fried chicken and collard greens at the Champions Dinner when he returns to Augusta National next year.

Such racially charged comments have been justly denounced by African-American groups, and Zoeller will probably spend the rest of his life apologizing for his stupidity.

To further highlight the inappropriateness of Zoeller's remarks, Woods himself, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey scheduled to be telecast today, says he doesn't like to be called an African-American. As it happens, the young golfing sensation is one-fourth black, one-fourth Thai, one-fourth Chinese, one-eighth white and one-eighth American Indian.

That's something to keep in mind the next time snap judgments are made about people based on the color of their skin.
