The primary point
Are our state senators incapable of voting on a bill passed
by the Texas House without tampering with it?
The House passed an entirely sensible measure to move Texas
primary elections from March to May. It's obvious that the March
Super Tuesday has failed its intended purpose of giving Texas
clout in presidential elections and has instead stretched the
campaign season to unnecessary and expensive lengths. Moving the
date back to May is just common sense, a no-brainer.
But when the House bill arrived at the Senate State Affairs
Committee, it acquired one significant modification.
The current early January candidate filing deadline was retained
- which pretty well defeats the whole point of moving the primary
date in the first place!
If the Senate passes its version of the bill, a conference
committee must iron out the differences. Maybe then the more reasonable
minds of the House will prevail.
