View of higher values

Property values in Abilene rose moderately this year, but whether you see that as good or bad news might depend on whether the House or the Senate predominates in the Legislature's attempt to restructure property taxes.

The two houses are miles apart. The plan passed by the House would provide about $5 billion in property tax cuts over two years and lower residential tax rates by an average of 60 cents per $100 property value. The Senate version provides only about half that much in tax cuts and lowers rates an average of 17 cents per $100 for homeowners.

If our legislators can resolve this impasse with a compromise that furnishes real property tax relief, then the rest of us may be able to more easily perceive and enjoy the benefits of owning property that has become more valuable.
