Carrying the baggage
True, passengers clogging the aisles while they wrestle oversize
bags into the overhead compartments, hogging the scarce space,
are one of the less pleasant aspects of airline travel. But they
are hardly a cause for more government red tape.
The voice of the baggage industry, the Luggage and Leather
Goods Manufacturers of America, is asking the Federal Aviation
Administration to regulate and enforce the size of carry-on bags.
The disposition of carry-on bags does not seem to require the
might and majesty of the United States government.
Airlines might want to use carry-on bags as a promotional device,
from the wide-open, "If you can get it through the cabin
door, it flies inside," to the more austere, "If you
can't bear to be parted from your bags, fly in the baggage compartment."
Neither would likely attract much business.
Carry-on bags and their owners can be a nuisance and inconvenience.
Surely the airlines and their passengers can work out reasonable
guidelines.
