Football meets boycott
The new college football season gets under way in full force
Saturday, and for thousands of diehard armchair devotees throughout
the state, the lineup of televised games offers action nearly
all day long.
But TV football fans who happen to be observing the Southern
Baptists' boycott of all things Disney are poised to experience
conflict.
First, Baylor University, the state's largest Baptist school,
opens its fall campaign against the University of Miami at 2:30
p.m. on Disney-owned ABC. Then, at 6:30 p.m., Texas Tech
plays its first game of the year against the University of Tennessee
on ESPN, 80 percent of which is owned by Disney.
Powerhouses Tennessee, ranked No. 5 in the nation, and Miami,
ranked No. 14, are heavily favored over the two unranked Texas
teams. That might reduce any temptation to suspend the Disney
boycott, unless you're expecting a couple of serious upsets.
