A focus on Abilene
It's national news: Abilene's downtown was the pits, and now
it's worthy of the spotlight.
Actually, we should probably be pleased anytime Abilene makes
the state or national news, even if it's for crape myrtles, religious
cults or Knockers. But we would much rather it be in reports like
Monday night's on "ABC World News Tonight," and Sunday's
Dallas Morning News.
Both featured stories about Abilene's success at leveraging
arts dollars to help revitalize a downtown once scarred with shutters,
vacant weed-covered spaces and buildings destined for demolition.
The news story in Abilene's downtown some 15 years ago was
one of dereliction and abandonment, tempered with revitalization
efforts that some ridiculed as wasteful and useless.
It's a far different theme now. And while much remains to be
done to continue improving downtown, the people who have worked
so hard in this effort have every right to feel proud about the
new attention, and they deserve the community's thanks and congratulations.
We hope for more such stories in the future. And we hope the
next one includes a shot of a brand new city library adorning
one end of an even more vital downtown.
