A gift for curiosity
Author James Michener, who didn't start producing books until
he was 40, kept at it until shortly before he died almost a half
century later. And he was enormously popular.
He was also self-effacing. He said he would not be remembered
as a great stylist, that his books wouldn't be recalled as profound
artistic expressions. He called himself "just a storyteller."
One of Michener's greatest gifts was for curiosity. He traveled
the globe, searching and learning and asking. And then he crafted
sweeping narratives that captured imaginations. Along the way
he taught us much that textbooks could not drum into our minds,
carrying his readers from generation to generation of high human
drama.
Maybe he was "just a storyteller," but he was a gifted,
diligent one who leaves behind an enormous number of fans who
hung on every word.
