ACHS beats Seven Points by 50

By the Abilene Reporter-News

A close shave it wasn't.

The Abilene Christian High School Panthers dismembered the Seven Points Christian Life Academy Warriors 56-6 Friday night in a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools first-round playoff game.

Seven Points head coach Tyson Tims had promised to let his Warriors shave his head after a victory, but the combination of ACHS' John Estes IV and David Van Rheenen instead sliced apart the Seven Points defense.

Estes finished the game with six touchdown passes, but an unusually-low 206 yards through the air.

"The combination of their dropping extra guys back to prevent the pass and the strong winds really held John back early," said ACHS coach Steve Woods. "We really should have started running the ball earlier, though. That was my fault."

Although the Warriors were able to slow Estes early, it still didn't matter. The Panthers led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and had stretched the advantage to 36-6 at the half.

While the offense eventually played up to standard, Woods was most pleased with the play of his defense. In holding Seven Points to only six points, defensive end John Williams recorded seven quarterback sacks.

"John had an unbelievable game," Woods said. "It was, by far, his best game of the year. Not only did he have the seven sacks, but he combined with Stan Bailey and Mark Thomas to slow their bruising rushing attack."

While Williams was busy disrupting the Warriors' offense, it was Van Rheenen who was making life miserable for the Seven Points' defenders.

He finished the game with four touchdowns, two each rushing and receiving. The junior accounted for 52 yards rushing and 61 yards through the air.

In addition to Van Rheenen's scores, Aaron Andress, Jason Strader, Paden Parker and Joe Rodriguez all caught TD passes from Estes.
