Abilene High girl golfers in second at Region


LUBBOCK - The Abilene High girls golf team is in position to make its first-ever appearance at the Class 5A state tournament in Austin.

The Lady Eagles fired a 334 Monday during the first round of the Region I-5A tournament at Reese Air Force Base, good enough for second place just two strokes behind San Angelo Central. AHS leads third-place Amarillo High by five strokes going into today's final round.
Abilene High's score of 334 betters its previous season best by eight strokes.

The Lady Eagles were extremely balanced with three of their golfers - Allie Curry, Angela Armstrong and Aron Herman - all shooting 82. All three are tied with Kristen Clarke of Amarillo High for fifth place in the medalist standings.

Kasi Alexander led the Lady Bobcats to the lead and a 332 first-round performance by firing a 77. She trails Heidi Haas of Fort Worth Southwest in the medalist race by one shot.

Fort Worth Paschal leads the boys race by three shots over Mansfield, 308-311. The San Angelo Central boys are tied for fourth at 316.

Larry Austin of Fort Worth Richland leads the medalist race after shooting a 1-over par 73 Monday at the Meadowbrook Golf Course.
