O'Bryant keeps school record in the family
By JAIME ARON / Associated Press
DALLAS - Back in 1974, the New Waverly offense featured a pretty
good running back named Ike O'Bryant. One night all those falls
ago, O'Bryant was a scoring machine, finding the end zone a school-record
six times.
The record finally fell last Friday, but it remained in the
O'Bryant family. Ike's son Terrance added one to his old man's
mark in leading the Bulldogs to a playoff-clinching 48-36 victory
over Elkhart.
Terrance scored on runs of 15, 17, 30, 7, 59 and 23 yards and
caught a 6-yard touchdown pass. For the night, he had a career-best
249 yards on just 14 carries, caught four passes for 79 yards,
and even threw a 58-yard pass.
The performance - which occurred with Ike watching from the
stands - earned Terrance top billing on the season's final Associated
Press honor roll.
"He did some unbelievable things," New Waverly coach
Bob Eastland said. "I didn't even know how many touchdowns
he had. It wasn't like we were trying to get him the record. The
game was close all the way to the end."
O'Bryant's big night capped a regular season in which he's
averaged nearly 100 yards per game both rushing and passing -
and he doesn't ever line up under center.
"He gets so much attention that we've always got to disguise
him," said Eastland, who has redesigned his offense around
his multiple weapon. "We use him in three different positions
and use lots of motion."
O'Bryant lines up either as a receiver or in one of two backfield
positions. Most of his throws come on sweeps or after he takes
an option pitch.
Should the New Waverly offense be stopped, O'Bryant does the
punting. He's pretty good at it, too, averaging 41 yards per kick.
He also handles kickoffs, and he's the return man on both punts
and kickoffs.
The 6-foot-4-1/2, 200-pound senior has been on the varsity
for four years and is a three-year starter. He's also averaged
around 30 points per game in basketball the last three seasons.
While Ike O'Bryant parlayed his New Waverly success into a
scholarship to Abilene Christian, Terrance is aiming for Division
I-A.
"There's a lot of interest, but he really hasn't put a
big priority on that yet," Eastland said, adding that Terrance
is interested in Texas, Texas A&M, Houston and Louisiana State,
among others.
Although O'Bryant will play at least one more games - a Class
2A first-round playoff game Saturday against Rosebud-Lott - Eastland
already is bracing for life without him.
"I won't have him to create plays for," the coach
said.
He could, though, if he's willing to wait a few years.
Brandon O'Bryant is just in elementary school, but Ike's younger
son already is one of the team's managers.

the most Midland Lee has allowed this season. It wasn't enough,
though, as San Angelo Central lost 35-7.
-- Keith Meador was 12-of-21 passing for 256 yards with touchdowns
