Most Area Teams End Season Tonight

By BILL HART / Senior Staff Writer

The area high school football season comes to an end tonight, but some teams may have to wait until Saturday to find out who they face in the playoffs.

There is a possibility that District 3-4A in El Paso will wind up in a three-way tie for the last two spots. If that happens, a coin toss will be held Saturday morning to determine who advances. One will play Sweetwater in bi-district next week.

District 6 Six-Man could wind up in a three-way tie for first place among Highland, Borden County and Westbrook. Representatives from those schools will meet later tonight to work that out.

District 13 also could wind up in a three-way tie for second place and officials will meet Saturday to determine whether Strawn, Walnut Springs or Gustine will be in the playoffs with Gordon.

Here's a look at the various area races:

-- District 2-4A: Frenship is in as champion, and Lubbock Estacado and Levelland can nab other spots with wins. If Snyder beats Levelland and Estacado beats Frenship, Snyder makes the playoffs.

-- District 4-4A: Sweetwater and San Angelo Lake View play for first place. Andrews and Big Spring are in the running for the third spot.

-- District 5-4A: Brownwood is the champion, but Stephenville, Graham, Weatherford and Granbury still have playoff possibilities.

-- District 4-3A: Crane is the champion and the winner of the Colorado City-Sonora game goes as runner-up.

-- District 6-3A: Clyde and Wylie play for first and second place.

-- District 8-3A: Clifton and Glen Rose will advance if they win their games. Otherwise, Hillsboro would advance if it beats Whitney.

-- District 7-2A: Stamford and Albany play for the No. 1 spot tonight. Stamford is already in the playoffs. Win or lose, Albany is in, too - if Jim Ned beats Hawley.

-- District 8-2A: Roscoe is the champion and Eldorado the runner-up.

-- District 9-2A: Holliday is No. 1 and Haskell the runner-up.

-- District 11-2A: Cisco is 4-0 and plays 3-1 Hico. De Leon is 3-1 and plays Hamilton. If the Bearcats win, they are in the playoffs. If Cisco wins, it is the champion. If Hico and De Leon win, there is a three-way tie for first. If that happens, Cisco would have to lose to Hico by six points or less to make the playoffs.

-- District 12-2A: Junction is champion and plays 2-1-1 Mason. Bangs is also 2-1-1. If Mason wins, it goes as No. 2 because of its penetrations win over Bangs. If Junction and Bangs win, they go to the playoffs. If Bangs and Mason both lose and Goldthwaite beats San Saba, Goldthwaite advances.

-- District 5-A: Munday is the champion and Paducah runner-up.

-- District 6-A: Windthorst (4-0) plays Alvord (3-1). Bryson (4-1) is open. If Windthorst wins, it and Bryson advance. If Alvord wins, there will be a three-way tie, but Bryson is out on the point system.

-- District 7-A: Bronte is the champion, but Garden City, Sterling City and Robert Lee are tied for second. Bronte plays Garden City and Robert Lee meets Christoval. Sterling City played Miles Thursday night. If Sterling City loses, Robert Lee is in the playoffs.

-- District 8-A: Baird and Cross Plains meet to decide first and second.

-- District 4 Six-Man: Rochester and Guthrie play for first and second.

-- District 6: 4-0 Highland plays 3-1 Westbrook, and 3-1 Borden County faces 0-4 Ira. If Highland and Borden County win, they go to the playoffs. If Borden County and Westbrook win, the race ends in a three-way tie, a coin toss will be held tonight and the odd man is out. The winner of the game between the two remining teams will be the district champion and the loser will be the runner-up.

-- District 9: Woodson and Lueders-Avoca play for first and second.

-- District 10: Panther Creek and Blackwell play for first and second.

-- District 11: Zephyr is the champion, and the winner of the Sidney-Brookesmith game goes as runner-up if Zephyr beats Blanket.

-- District 12: Cherokee and Richland Springs play for the championship.

-- District 13: If Walnut Springs beats Gordon, it goes as champion and Gordon as No. 2. If Gordon wins, and Strawn beats Morgan and Gustine beats Iredell, then Strawn, Walnut Springs and Gustine tie for second. A coin toss Saturday will decide the other playoff team in that scenario.
