September 30 - Open Classic/Derby Starts: Today, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Taylor County Expo Center Coliseum, some of the best trainers will be competing in both the First-Go of the Open Classic and the First-Go of the Open Derby.

....In the first-go of the Open Derby the list could be: Paul Hansma, Gary Bellenfant, Bill Freeman, John Tolbert, Buster Welch, Winston Hansma, Greg Welch, Kobie Wood, Rodney Schumann, Lindy Burch.
....Each day after the competition is complete, Ben Emison offers time to the owners and trainers to work on some of the finishing touches needed to prepare for the NCHA Super Stakes, which is scheduled in December at Fort Worth.

September 28 - Shootout Sunday: More than 450 cars are expected for the fourth annual Abilene Shootout Drag Race today and Sunday at Abilene Regional Airport.

...Gates open at 8 a.m. and time trials start at 9 a.m. both days. Admission is $10 for today and $12 for Sunday, or a two-day pass is $20 which also includes a pit pass. There is a $3 pit pass charge today and no pit pass charge on Sunday.
...."We had 450 cars last year and we're expecting close to 500 cars this year," said Mike Dohrse, vice president of Abilene Motor Sports Inc. "We'll have some of the fastest street cars in America here."
....The cars will race on a -1/8-mile drag strip at the airport.
...."It'll be a spectacular event in that nobody in American runs more than 400 cars over a two-day period," Dohrse said. "What makes that possible is the tremendous number of volunteers that help us."
....Dohrse said that 10 to 12 of the fastest street cars in the United States will be on hand in addition to the regular entries in the field.

September 26 - Teaff Speaking in Abilene: Grant Teaff will be in Abilene the next four days to participate in "Bridging the Great Divide,"a Fellowship of Christian Athletes program. His regular work could be called "Bridging the United States."


....The former Snyder High School football player and later head football coach at McMurry University and Baylor University is now the executive director of Football Coaches Association and that takes him all over the country. He's also the national chairman of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' board of directors.
....In fact, he will help conduct a campus wide church service at McMurry Sunday morning, then fly to Chicago for a Monday meeting with the athletic directors from NCAA Division I-A schools. He had returned from a Chicago meeting Tuesday. In the near future, he'll be attending a coaches convention in Orlando, Fla.

September 25 - Eagle VBers Win: Abilene High posted its second straight District 4-5A victory over a team previously unbeaten in league play on Tuesday, downing Odessa High 15-11, 15-10.
...."The girls came out fired up," said AHS head coach Didi Pierce, whose Lady Eagles had a season-high 20 kills. "They were building off the win Saturday (over Midland High). They were pretty much determined that this year they are going to do something. We improved a lot on our blocking."
....Kelly Armbruster paced the Lady Eagles in kills with eight, and teammate April Letz added five. 20 kills as a team most all season. Had eight aces as a team.
....The Lady Eagles, who are now 2-2 in district and 8-9 overall, will play next on Saturday at home against Midland Lee starting at 2:30 p.m.
....Odessa High is now 2-1 in district.

September 25 - CHS VBers top Permian: Cooper survived its first three-game match in district play to beat Odessa Permian, 15-8, 13-15, 15-3, in volleyball action at Cougar Gym.
....Cooper improved to 3-0 in District 4-5A and 11-8 overall while Permian fell to 0-4 and 12-9 .
...."That third game was a wake-up call and we came back and took control," Cooper coach Beth Wills said.
....Cooper recorded 36 kills as a team. Catherine Weir led the way with 12 while Jessie Wise added 9 and Melisse Watkins had 6.
....Cooper's next match is Saturday at Midland High.

September 25 - HPU 6th, HSU 10 in NAIA Division II: Howard Payne jumped from ninth to sixth in this week's NAIA Division II football poll after last Saturday's 24-21 victory over Hardin-Simmons, while the Cowboys fell from No. 5 to No. 10.
....Findlay, Ohio is still No. 1 in the rankings, and the No. 2 and 3 spots also remained unchanged with Western Washington and Malone, Ohio. But Benedictine, Kan. moved up from sixth to fourth and Sioux Falls, S.D. improved from No. 7 to No. 5.
....This Saturday, Howard Payne (2-0) will play in Alpine against Sul Ross State and Hardin-Simmons (1-1) will play at McMurry.

September 25 - 4 more Arlington students punished: Three Arlington High School football players have been barred from playing in the school's homecoming game this Friday and a wrestling team member will miss one meet after admitting that they drank alcohol at a party where a 16-year-old girl says she was sexually assaulted.
....The students' suspensions Monday from extracurricular activities follow those of at least nine students who were barred from participating in Arlington High's football game Saturday and were reinstated to the team Monday by coach Bill Keith.
....The reinstated students, including two female trainers, served the one-game suspension for drinking at the Sept. 13 party, school district spokeswoman Charlene Robertson said.
....Ms. Robertson said nine players and the two trainers were suspended and reinstated, but Keith said only seven players and two trainers were involved.

September 25 - Longhorn linebacker requires surgery: Texas starting inside linebacker Dusty Renfro will be out of action for a while after suffering a ligament tear in his right thumb in the Notre Dame game.
....Head coach John Mackovic said Renfro, a sophomore who has started all three games this season, requires surgery and will miss two to four weeks following the procedure.

September 25 - Oilers reserve quarterback arrested: Houston Oilers reserve quarterback James Ritchey is free on $500 bond after being arrested for public intoxication.
....Ritchey, a rookie third-string free agent with the Oilers, was attending a charity barbecue over the weekend in Nacogdoches - about 125 miles northeast of Houston - where he was starting quarterback last year for Stephen F. Austin.

September 24 - AHS-CHS Tickets on Sale: Tickets for Friday night's District 4-5A football opener between Abilene High and Cooper will go on sale today at 8 a.m. at the AISD administration building at 842 N. Mockingbird.
....Ticket sales will end at the building will end at noon Friday. Adults can purchase tickets at the administration building for $5, but will have to pay $6 at the gate.
Students can purchase tickets for $2 at school and $4 at the gate.
....AISD officials say they are expecting a sellout for the game between the 2-1 Cougars and 3-0 Eagles.
....AHS will be the home team and its fans will sit on the west (press box) side, while Cooper fans will sit on the east side of the stadium.

September 23 - Annual Cutting Spectacular Starts: Three days of cutting horse activity will be held at the Taylor County Expo Center with the Carolyn and Pat Gully-sponsored Abilene Fall Spectacular.
....The Gullys sponsor four events each year featuring the Winter and Summer Spectacular which are normally 8-day events and the Spring and Fall 3-day events. All events are sanctioned by the National Cutting Horse Association.
....A $1,000-added purse is offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Open and Non-Pro Class with $500 added to entry money in the $5,000 Open and Non-Pro Novice Classes and the $50,000 Amateur Class. The $20,000 Non-Pro, $10,000 Amateur, $3,000 Novice, $2,000 Limited Rider and Youth Classes are jackpot affairs.
....Each day begins at 9 a.m. with the Open Class.

September 22 - AHS, CHS Volleyballers Win Big

September 22 - ACHS 41, Cornerstone 20: John Estes threw for 440 yards with 6 touchdown passes as Abilene Christian knocked off Cornerstone, the state's top-ranked TAPPS team, 41-20 Saturday.
....After taking an early 12-0 lead, the Panthers saw the Eagles score a touchdown with just 42 seconds left in the half. However, ACHS then responded with a touchdown of their own, just 11 seconds before the end of the half.
...."That was a huge touchdown," said ACHS coach Steve Woods. "We had lost the momentum going into the half, and with that score we took it back."
....Hauling in Estes' touchdown passes were Joe Rodriguez, who caught 3 touchdowns in picking up 240 yards receiving, Lee Hedestream, Paden Parker and Jason Strader.
Defensively, ACHS scored when John Williams picked up a fumble and rumbled 25 yards for a score.

September 22 - Cooper Tennis Team Skunks Lee: Cooper routed Midland Lee 18-0 Saturday in a District 4-5A dual meet.

...."Quick and painless," CHS coach Jimmy Cole said. "They went out there and took care of their business. Lee had a good attitude and competed and had a good time. Good competition."
....The Cooper junior varsity beat Lee by a 16-2 count.
....Cooper's next competition will be at home against Odessa Permian on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

September 21 - Rangers Lose to Angels: The Rangers, straight from a sweep by the Mariners, took the California Angels to extra innings but couldn't stop the bleeding, losing 6-5 .
....The Mariners beat the A's Friday night, so Texas is now only 1 game up in the AL West race.

September 21 (early) - Ranger Collapse Could Be Historic: The '69 Cubs. The '78 Red Sox. The '64 Phillies. The '96 Rangers?
...Baseball experts and former players on those teams say the Texas Rangers' collapse-in-progress, if it continues, would stand among the biggest in baseball history.
....Scarcely more than a week ago, on Sept. 11, the Rangers' AL West lead over Seattle stood at nine games.
....Insurmountable, right?
....That's what pitcher Ferguson Jenkins thought. He pitched for the 1969 Chicago Cubs, who led the New York Mets by 9-1/2 games on Aug. 14. Then the Cubs went 8-17 in September and lost the divisional race to Tom Seaver's "Miracle Mets" by eight games.
...."There's always one ballclub to go through it," Jenkins, now the Cubs' pitching coach, said Friday. "It's tough."
....The Rangers, hoping for the first playoff berth in franchise history, are on the verge of folding the same way. Entering Friday night's game against the California Angels, they were 1-8 since Sept. 11, including an improbable four-game sweep in Seattle. Their lead dwindled to two games with nine games left to play.

September 21 (early) - Arlington High Players Suspended: Seven Arlington High School football players were suspended from Friday night's game after admitting that they drank alcohol at a party at which a girl allegedly was raped, the coach said.

....A 16-year-old Arlington High School student told police that she was sexually assaulted at a party Sept. 13.
....Arlington police spokesman Dee Anderson said Friday that no warrants had been issued nor arrests made.
....Superintendent Lynn Hale told school board members Thursday about the rape allegation and the suspensions ordered by Arlington head coach Bill Keith.
....She did not identify which players might have been involved in the attack. None of the suspended players were identified.

September 21 (early) - Wildcats to Run Saturday: Abilene Christian University will face several of the top NCAA Division I and Division II cross country teams in the nation Saturday at the annual Southern Stampede.

....The meet begins at 9 a.m. with the women's 5,000-meter race, followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 9:45 a.m. at Missouri Southern State College.

September 21 (early) - McMurry runners second, third: The McMurry University cross country team took second in the men's division and third in the women's race Thursday in the Angelo State Invitational triangular cross country meet.

....Angelo State won both divisions.

September 21 (early) - Stars Assign Players to Michigan: The Dallas Stars have assigned four players to Michigan of the International Hockey League, leaving the NHL club with 32 players on its roster.

....Right-winger Pat Elynuik, defenseman Dan Keczmer, right-winger Mark Lawrence and left-winger Jim Storm were sent to the K-Wings before the Stars' Friday night exhibition against Calgary.

September 19 - Rangers Lose Again: Trailing Texas by nine games last Wednesday, the Mariners cut the Rangers' dwindling lead in the AL West to three, winning by identical 5-2 scores Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
....It was Seattle's seventh straight win and Texas' seventh loss in eight games.

September 19 (early) - Mariners Turn Up Heat: The Seattle Mariners have turned up the heat, and the Texas Rangers are starting to sweat.
...."They could leave town only two up," the Mariners' Mark Whiten said ofthe Rangers. "Then I think it would come down to which team plays the bestbaseball the final week."
....Trailing Texas by nine games last Wednesday, the Mariners cut the Rangers'dwindling lead in the AL West to four Tuesday night, winning 5-2. It wasSeattle's sixth straight win and Texas' sixth loss in seven games.

September 19 (early) - ACU track teams to be honored: Both Abilene Christian University's track teams and the seven members who competed in the Olympics at Atlanta will be honored Friday and Saturday.
....ACU won the NCAA Division II men's and women's championship at the indoor and outdoor meets last year, the first school to accomplish that feat. ....The four championhip trophies will be presented to school president Dr. Royce Money during Friday's 11 a.m. assembly in Moody Coliseum.
....The teams will also be introduced at halftime Saturday during the ACU-Midwestern football game at Shotwell Stadium.
....The Olympians are Tracey Barnes, Robert Guy, Hermin Joseph, Andy Kokhanovsky, Savieri Ngidhi, Joseph Styles and Mary Tombiri-Shirey.

September 18 - Mariners Skunked Rangers: A few more pitching efforts like this just might get the Seattle Mariners into the postseason.
....The American League's best hitting team got a combined four-hit shutout from Jamie Moyer and Bobby Ayala as the Mariners defeated the Texas Rangers 6-0 Monday night in the first of a four-game series.
....Seattle pitchers have thrown 24 consecutive shutout innings. It gave the Mariners back-to-back shutout victories for the first time since April 27-28, 1993 against the Cleveland Indians.

September 18 - ACU Wins Golf Tourney: Abilene Christian University shot an 877 to defeat McNeese State and Southwest Texas State by 11 strokes to win the University of Texas-Pan American Intercollegiate Golf Classic Tuesday at The Club at Cimarron.
.....ACU's Jeff White finished third overall, while teammate Brandon Scott tied for fourth place.

September 18 - ACU women ranked third: Abilene Christian University remains third in the women's division of the NCAA Division II cross country poll while the ACU men dropped to 12th.
....The ACU women trail only Adams State (Colo.) and Wisconsin-Parkside after posting a near-perfect score of 17 in last weekend's ACU cross country classic.
....The Wildcats will compete this weekend in Joplin, Mo. at Missouri Southern University.

September 16 - Rangers Beat Milwaukee: Mark McLemore and Mickey Tettleton homered as Texas beat Milwaukee, ending the Rangers' season-high four-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on the day the team retired Nolan Ryan's number.

....Texas had seen its AL West lead over streaking Seattle cut from nine games to six. The teams open a four-game series in the Kingdome on Monday night.
....The Rangers trailed 2-1 when McLemore led off the sixth with a homer off Ramon Garcia (4-4). His fifth homer of the year landed in the right-field seats, almost directly under the "34 Nolan Ryan 34' " sign unveiled during a pregame ceremony.
....Will Clark followed with a single, and Tettleton homered off Bob Wickman.
Darren Oliver (13-6), the winner in Texas' last victory on Tuesday, won his third straight start. Ed Vosberg got his eighth save.

September 16 - ACU Opens Golf Season: Abilene Christian University will open its 1996 fall golf season today at the Texas-Pan American Golf Classic.

....The Wildcats will play in the 54-hole tournament at The Club in Cimarron. It's the first of five tournaments this fall for Coach Vince Jarrett's Wildcats. Golfers will play 36 holes today and 18 on Tuesday.
....ACU has four lettermen back from last year's team, which finished eighth in the NCAA Division II national tournament. They are seniors Greg LaBelle, Brandon Scott and Jeff White and junior Brandon Johnson.

September 14 - Rangers Lose Third in Row: Jose Valentin's sixth-inning homer snapped a tie and rookie Jeff D'Amico pitched six strong innings as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-3 Friday night.
....The Rangers, who lead the AL West by seven games over Seattle, have lost three straight games for the first time since Aug. 1-3.

September 14 - Permian Skunked: The North Mesquite Stallions upheld their No. 1 ranking in Class 5A Friday night, thumping second-ranked Odessa Permian 27-0 behind a 78-yard touchdown run by Adrian Cox and two touchdown passes by Will Overstreet.

....Just as impressive was the North Mesquite defense, which held Permian to 85 total yards. The Mojo got only 17 yards in the third quarter and were held to minus-2 yards in the fourth quarter.

September 14 - Astros' McLane says stadium decision near: Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane said Friday that if he and Harris County can't agree on a stadium deal this weekend he will ask baseball owners for permission to negotiate with potential buyers who would move the team.

...."We made a lot of progress in the last two days, so we hope we could reach some agreement in the next three days," McLane said in a telephone interview from Fort Worth, Texas. "I'm very confident that we can. But if we can't, we would move forward."
....Among the issues still undecided, McLane said, is the amount of money he would receive if the county were to reacquire his lease at the county-owned Astrodome. He would not reveal any figures.
....The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that McLane wants about $20 million for the lease to help him bridge an interim period while he waits for a $265 million, 42,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof to be built downtown.
....Harris County Judge Robert Eckels has not budged past $10 million for the lease, which runs through 2023, the newspaper said.

September 14 - District 4-5A Volleyball Starts Today: The District 4-5A girls volleyball race begins today with the traditional cross-town rivals meeting in the opener.

....Abilene High and Cooper meet today at 2:30 p.m. at Abilene High's Eagle Gym.
....The Lady Eagles are 6-7 and Lady Cougars 6-8 overall, but both teams are coming off victories on Tuesday.
....Cricket Holt served nine aces in Cooper's 15-3, 15-4 win over Lubbock Estacado, while Kelly Armbruster had six kills and three aces in Abilene High's 17-15, 15-10 victory over Water Valley.

September 14 - Cowgirls down Dallas, 3-0, in soccer: Melanie Forster had two of Hardin-Simmons three second-half goals in the Cowgirls' 3-0 soccer win over the University of Dallas Friday at Shelton Stadium.

....The win improved HSU to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
Jennifer Alford scored the other HSU goal while teammate Mandy Melchor posted her second shutout of the season. Forster's goals upped her season total to three.
HSU plays Texas Lutheran today in Seguin.

September 14 - ACU volleyballers go for second win: Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M-Commerce, two teams which picked up their first league wins Thursday, will meet today in Lone Star Conference women's volleyball.

....ACU (2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference) will meet Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. at Lion Fieldhouse.
....Abilene Christian broke a four-match losing streak Thursday with a four-game road win at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Also Thursday, the Lady Lions took their first win of the season in a five-game contest with winless Angelo State.
....Emily Hale, a junior hitter from McPherson, Kan., hit .348 with 21 kills for the Lady Wildcats in Thursday's win.

September 14 - ACU coasts to CC title: Abilene Christian University posted a near-perfect winning total of 17 points in the women's division Friday in cruising to the championship of the ACU cross country classic.

....The ACU men finished second with 36 points as they were edged by South Plains College which had 35.
....ACU's Miranda Boonstra, Casi Florida and Vivian Ruijters finished 1-2-3. Former ACU runner Karen Vann was fourth and current ACU runner Josie Martinez was fifth. Boonstra's winning time was 18:16.
....Musa Gwanzura of ACU claimed the men's title with a time of 19:50 and teammates Fallody Moonga and Thomas Korir were third and fourth, respectively.

September 14 - HSU Volleyballers Win: Hardin-Simmons University earned its second volleyball win of the season, 15-5, 15-9, 15-10, over Dallas Baptist University Friday.

...."Shawn Baker and Misty Williams both had really good games. Everyone played well," Coach Gina Markin said after HSU improved to 2-10.
....The Cowgirls host McMurry Tuesday at 3 p.m. in their first ASC game. Both teams will also play College of the Southwest Tuesday - McMurry at 5 p.m. and HSU at 7 p.m.

September 13 - Video commercials silenced at UT: After it was booed by the home crowd, University of Texas athletics officials say they will turn down the volume on their JumboTron football stadium video screen.

....Fans were vocal in their opposition to the big screen's commercials, which at times drowned out the Longhorn band.
....The university announced that three of eight video board sponsors - Taco Bell, Coca Cola and the University Federal Credit Union - have agreed to dump the sound from their commercials.

September 13 - Tennis Tournament at ACU: The Wal-Mart Collegiate Tennis tournament at Abilene Christian University today and Saturday has drawn eight teams.

....Competing in the men's division are Hardin-Simmons, Cameron, Howard Payne, Central Oklahoma, New Mexico Military Institute, West Texas A&M, McMurry and ACU. ....HSU, North Texas, Howard Payne, Central Oklahoma, Eastern New Mexico University, West Texas A&M, McMurry and ACU are in the women's division.
....The tournament starts at 8 a.m. with matches at ACU, HSU and Rose Park Tennis Center. Saturday's action starts at 8 a.m. at ACU.

September 13 - ACU hosts cross country meet today: Twelve teams will compete in the Abilene Christian University cross country meet which starts at 6 p.m. today at the Sherrod Residential Park.

....The women will run three miles and the men four miles.

September 12 - Toronto Beats Rangers: Texas third baseman Dean Palmer committed two errors on the same play, allowing Toronto to score the go-ahead run in a six-run seventh inning Wednesday night that gave the Blue Jays an 8-3 win over the Rangers.

September 12 - Astros Owner to Decide Team's Fate This Week: Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr., who will decide this week whether to put his team up for sale, met Wednesday with Mayor Bob Lanier.
....The mayor wouldn't reveal whether any progress had been made in stadium talks during the meeting at his home.
...."It's still down to the final elements," Lanier said. "No closure has been reached. It's close. We had a good meeting, no details that I'll say anything about."
....McLane, whose team is sagging in its bid to reach attendance goals he set to keep the Astros in town, Tuesday declined to say what he wanted to discuss with Lanier.

September 12 - Astros Acquire Cedeno: The Houston Astros Wednesday acquired infielder Andujar Cedeno from the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named.
....Cedeno played for the Astros from 1990-94.
...."With the nagging injuries to Bill Spiers and Ricky Gutierrez, in addition to Sean Berry's current condition, we felt we needed some insurance for the left side of our infield," Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. "Acquiring Andujar Cedeno gives us someone with major league experience at third base and short stop."

September 12 - Lady Indians win match: McMurry University swept UT-Permian Basin in three straight games, 15-7, 15-8, 15-11, in women's volleyball action Wednesday. The victory improved the Lady Indians' record to 3-3 on the young season.

September 11 - Rangers Win Again: Will Clark hit a three-run homer Tuesday night as the Texas Rangers won their fifth straight game with an 11-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
....It was the Rangers' eighth consecutive win over the Blue Jays.
....Darren Oliver (12-6) gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings as the AL West-leading Rangers moved a season-high 22 games over .500.
....Mike Henneman got the last out for his 30th save, retiring Shannon Stewart on a grounder to third with men on first and third.
....After Ivan Rodriguez's run-scoring single in the third, Clark hit his 11th home run of the season to give Texas a 4-1 lead.

September 11 (early) - Oilers Giving Suites to Charity: The Houston Oilers, determined to be good neighbors before officially arriving in Tennessee, have donated 75 luxury suites to charity for the San Francisco game.
....The VIP luxury suites, valued at $15,000, will be sold in travel packages to the Oct. 27 game in Houston at $1,000 apiece. The money will go to the Clinic Bowl, which primarily funds the Vanderbilt Hospital Physical Therapy Clinic.
...."We've said from the beginning that Mr. (Bud) Adams and the Houston Oilers are going to be good corporate citizens of Nashville and Tennessee," said Mike McClure, the Oilers' vice president for administration.
....Adams owns the team.
....The Clinic Bowl, which has been held since 1950, is played in December to determine Tennessee's high school football champions.

September 10 - Rangers Extend Lead: The Texas Rangers matched the biggest lead in team history, extending their edge in the AL West to eight games Monday night with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

....Mickey Tettleton's go-ahead double in the sixth inning sent the Rangers to their fourth straight victory. Texas, the only team in the league that has never made the playoffs, also led by eight games over Seattle on Aug. 25.
....Texas overcame a 3-0 deficit against Pat Hentgen (17-9), who pitched his major league-leading 10th complete game. Hentgen struck out 10, but the Rangers still beat Toronto for the seventh straight time this season.

September 10 (early) - UT Feeling Better About Irish: Texas coach John Mackovic has barely looked at Notre Dame's game tapes in preparation for the seventh-ranked Longhorns' matchup with the Fighting Irish on Sept. 21.

....But already, Mackovic feels better about playing the Irish after an off week than he did last year.
....That's because Mackovic had only four scholarship defensive linemen with game experience - due to injuries - heading to South Bend, Ind., last season to face a typically behemoth Notre Dame offensive line.
....Those who did play ended up out of position, filling in for the missing starters.
....One of the casualties was defensive end Tony Brackens, who was out with a hairline fracture in his right leg.

September 10 (early) - McMurry's Bailey Recognized: McMurry University running back Darren Bailey, a senior from Wylie, is one of four players honored as American Southwest Conference players of the week.

....Bailey gained 116 yards on just six carries and scored three touchdowns in the Indians' 57-0 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God College.
....He shared the offensive player of the week award with Sul Ross State running back Jesse Lynch and Howard Payne wide receiver Tyrone Brown.
....Lynch rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns in the Lobos' 46-23 win over Panhandle State. Brown had an 80-yard kickoff return and a 90-yard punt return for touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets' 30-18 win over Thomas More College.
....McMurry strong safety Cole Adams was the ASC defensive player of the week. He recorded a pair of interceptions - returning one for a touchdown - and had three tackles.

....- Offensive player of the week: Ballinger running back Ricky Guerrero played with a heavily-padded shoulder that was dislocated a few weeks ago, but he rushed for 173 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 69, 2 and 67 yards n a 48-14 win Friday over Midland Greenwood.
....- Defensive player of the week: Defensive back John Hernandez of De Leon. He intercepted two passes and returned them 20 and 80 yards in a 21-0 win over Eastland. He broke up two other passes and was in on seven tackles. Last year, Hernandez intercepted seven passes and ran two back for touchdowns.
....- Six-Man player of the week. Brookesmith back Eric Clawson completed 32 of 39 passes for 370 yards and six touchdowns (no interceptions) and ran for four touchdowns, gaining 124 yards on 10 carries, in a 66-20 win over Rochelle.

September 9 - Rangers Defeat Milwaukee: Texas starter Bobby Witt weathered the rain delay better than the Milwaukee Brewers' bullpen did.

....Witt stayed in the game after a 1:07 rain delay following the second inning Sunday and finished with a five-hitter and Darryl Hamilton, Mickey Tettleton and Juan Gonzalez homered as the Rangers defeated Milwaukee 7-1.

September 9 - ACU, ASU Making Mark in LSC: Texas A&M-Kingsville was the preseason Lone Star Conference favorite, but the Javelinas already are looking up in the standings to Angelo State.

....Angelo State defeated Western New Mexico 41-3 for its second victory of the season Saturday, while the Javelinas lost their season opener to North Dakota State 20-10.
....In other games involving Lone Star Conference teams: Abilene Christian beat Prairie View A&M 30-14; Texas A&M-Commerce defeated Harding (Ark.) 43-28; Central Oklahoma beat Mesa State 48-10; Adams State defeated West Texas A&M 13-10; New Mexico Highlands defeated Eastern New Mexico 29-6 and Tarleton State defeated Midwestern State 23-10.

September 8 - Rangers Beat Brewers: Ken Hill and four relievers combined on a four-hitter Saturday, and the Texas Rangers cut their magic number for winning their first division title to 16 with a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

....The Rangers took a seven-game lead in the AL West over Seattle, which was rained out at Cleveland.
...Hill (15-8) won his fourth straight road decision, allowing one run and three hits in 6 2-3 innings. Mike Henneman got two outs for his 28th save.

September 8 - Baylor Hangs on for Win: Two touchdown passes by Jeff Watson staked Baylor to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter Saturday night and the Bears held off Louisiana Tech 24-16.

....Jerod Douglas' 51-yard touchdown run expanded Baylor's lead to 21-3 with 11:07 left in the third quarter and freshman Kyle Atteberry's 39-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the game clinched the Bears' season-opening victory after Tech (1-1) had closed the gap to 21-16.

September 8 - TCU Beats Oklahoma: Redshirt freshman Jeff Dover passed for two touchdowns as Texas Christian upset Oklahoma 20-7 Saturday, spoiling coach John Blake's debut and breaking the Sooners' 13-year streak of season-opening victories.


....TCU (1-0), which joined the Western Athletic Conference this year and was a 9-1/2-point underdog, scored first when Michael Reeder kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, capitalizing on a fumbled punt return by Oklahoma's Rodney Rideau.

September 8 - Cooper Volleyballers Lose: Arlington High School bounced Cooper out of the Arlington volleyball tournament Saturday morning, scoring a 15-5, 15-9 victory.

...."We played well in some areas Friday, but we didn't play very well against Arlington," coach Beth Wills said. "They have a tough team, but we had some unforced errors that hurt us (in the second game against Arlington).
....Cooper, 5-8 on the season, plays Lubbock Estacado Tuesday night.

September 8 - SMU Beats Arkansas: SMU linebacker Craig Swann and quarterback Ramon Flanigan turned the first half around in a few seconds, and then Flanigan threw a screen pass for a touchdown early in the second half as the Mustangs beat Arkansas 23-10 Saturday.

....Arkansas (0-1) was in position to expand a 10-7 lead when Swann chased down quarterback Pete Burks, caused a fumble and recovered it at the Mustangs 48.

September 8 - McMurry runners finish sixth: The McMurry men finished sixth in the West Texas A&M cross country meet Saturday as Fort Hays State swept both divisions.

....McMurry had two women competing and former Abilene High runner Jessica Thompson finished 25th and Janet Ramage 35. Fort Hays scored 23 points to win the title and New Mexico Highlands was second at 33.
....Fort Hays swept the first three individual places and scored 19 points to win the men's crown while Central Oklahoma was second with 71 points. McMurry had 158 points.

September 7 (early) - PDogs Try for Berth: The Abilene Prairie Dogs will send unbeaten Lance Schuermann to the mound Saturday at Scott Field to try to close out Amarillo and earn a berth in the Texas-Louisiana League Championship Series.

.....The Dogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series on Thursday in Amarillo with a 7-4 victory over the Dillas.
.....A victory Saturday will put Abilene in the league Championship Series against the winner of the Lubbock-Rio Grande Valley series. A loss, however, would force a Game 3 Sunday night at Scott Field.

September 7 (early) - McMurry Opens at Home: The McMurry University Indians hope to give Southwestern Assemblies of God College a rude welcome to the world of college football.

....The Lions have been competing in football as a club sport for the past several years, while the Indians will be using the game as a tuneup for its American Southwest Conference opener next Saturday at home against 12th-ranked Howard Payne.
....Coach Steve Keenum's Tribe will feature eight returning starters on defense as the team tries to bounce back from losing 9 of 10 games a year ago.

September 7 (early) - Tech, OSU to Tangle: The coaches at Oklahoma State and Texas Tech both believe the mistakes their teams made last week are correctable, and that fans at Texas Stadium will see the results Saturday.

....Difference is, the Red Raiders are 0-1 after losing the first Big 12 game, and the Cowboys are 1-0 after winning Division 1-A's first overtime duel, albeit against a lightly regarded non-conference opponent.
...."I would like to think that this team knows it can be a better football team," OSU coach Bob Simmons said despite a 23-20 victory over Southwest Missouri State last weekend. "I'm hoping that that does happen, but we've got to go out and prove that. We haven't proved that yet."
....The last time the teams squared off on neutral soil was 1988 in Tokyo, where OSU won a wild 45-42 offensive show. That was an interleague game between Tech of the Southwest Conference and OSU of the Big 8.

September 6 (early) - Two Rangers Get Medical Treatment: The Texas Rangers' flag is still flying in their pennant race, despite getting slightly tattered with a loss to the Minnesota Twins.

....Two players faced medical treatment Thursday following the first-place Rangers' 7-6 loss that included Roger Pavlik's dispirited pitching.
....Rusty Greer, who hit a two-run triple in the second inning that made it 6-all, aggravated a rib cage injury while running the bases and left the game.
....While X-rays were inconclusive, Greer faced a bone scan late Thursday afternoon, said Rangers spokesman Charlie Green.
....The team said Greer could be out from two days to three weeks.
....The Rangers' troubles Wednesday night began even before the game. Second baseman Mark McLemore fractured his jawbone after he was struck in the face with a fungo bat swung by coach Bucky Dent while jogging to the batting cage during practice. He was scratched from the starting lineup, replaced by Rene Gonzales.

September 5 - Rangers Lose: Paul Molitor tripled, doubled and singled, giving him 2,987 hits and tying Sam Rice for 21st on the career list as the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 7-6 Wednesday night.

....Rich Becker's homer helped the Twins take an early 6-0 lead. Juan Gonzalez hit his 42nd homer and Dean Palmer also homered during Texas' six-run second inning that tied it.

September 5 - Prairie View A&M Coach Suspended: These are not good times for Prairie View A&M football.
....The Panthers extended their losing streak to an NCAA-record 58 games Saturday in a 42-24 setback to Texas Southern at the Astrodome.
....That in itself is bad. Tuesday, matters worsened for the Panthers.
....Head football coach and athletic director Hensley Sapenter Jr. was suspended with pay pending a school investigation into possible violations of NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference rules.
....The allegations involve the use of ineligible players in the loss to TSU.

September 4 - PDogs Beat Amarillo: Lance Schuermann is still perfect, and the Abilene Prairie Dogs are still in first place.


....Schuermann, working on three days rest for the first time, worked all seven innings to earn the win Tuesday night in a 4-1 victory over Amarillo.
....It was the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Crutcher Scott Field, which wrapped up the Texas-Louisiana League's regular-season schedule.
....Schuermann is now 12-0 on the season after limiting the Dillas to five hits in the seven-inning contest. He walked four and struck out three.
....The Prairie Dogs moved to 31-16 in the second half of play. Abilene, which won the first-half championship, entered the night hoping to avoid playing a first-round playoff series. But they had to win both games of the twinbill and hope Lubbock lost at least one of its two games Wednesday night in Harlingen against Rio Grande Valley.

September 4 - Rangers Send Helling to Florida: Texas Rangers pitcher Rick Helling has been sent to the Florida Marlins, completing the trade in which the team acquired right-handed pitcher John Burkett. Rangers pitcher Ryan Dempster also went to Florida in the deal.
....The Rangers announced Tuesday that they have activated pitcher Chris Nichting from the 60-day disabled list and sent him to the Oklahoma City 89ers, the Rangers' Triple A team.
....Another pitcher, Chris Curtis and outfielder Rikkert Faneyte, both on option to Oklahoma City, have been assigned outright to the 89ers.

September 4 - ACU Volleyballers Lose: Texas Wesleyan downed Abilene Christian University in straight sets Tuesday in a non-conference women's volleyball match.
....Texas Wesleyan beat ACU, 15-10, 15-6, 15-9.
....The loss drops the Lady Wildats to 1-4 on the young season, while Texas Wesleyan improves to 2-2.

September 4 - Ellis scores 4 goals for HSU: Jeff Ellis, a freshman from Dallas, scored four goals in his first collegiate game Tuesday, leading Hardin-Simmons University to a 4-1 men's soccer victory over Dallas Baptist at Shelton Stadium.
....Ellis scored two goals in each half.
....The Cowboys, 1-0, will play at home again Friday at 8 p.m. against UT-Dallas.

September 1 - PDogs Win: Ken Winkle tied a Texas-Louisiana League record with his 24th save of the season Saturday night, closing out the ninth inning in a 6-5 victory for the Abilene Prairie Dogs over Amarillo.
....The Prairie Dogs improved to 28-15 in the second half of play as they stayed in first place ahead of Lubbock by one-half game. Lubbock kept pace with its 6-2 win over Alexandria.

September 1 - Rangers Win; Extend Lead: Darren Oliver and the Texas Rangers beat Cleveland again, and Juan Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a pair of RBI singles Saturday night in a 6-3 victory over the Indians.

....Oliver (11-6) won his third game this season against Cleveland and improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Indians by scattering nine hits in 81/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked none as the Rangers beat the Indians for the seventh time in eight games and improved to 8-3 this season against the defending AL champions.
.....Texas boosted its lead over Seattle in the AL West to seven games.

September 1 - McMurry Volleyballers Lose: Southwestern beat an inexperienced McMurry team, 15-7, 15-8, 15-3, in the Lady Indians' volleyball opener Saturday.
....McMurry, 0-1, will play in the Howard Payne Classic this Friday and Saturday in Brownwood.

September 1 - ACU Splits Volleyball Matches: Abilene Christian University split a pair of matches Saturday to finish 1-3 in the Coca Cola Classic hosted by Mesa State University
....ACU beat Adams State, 15-4, 15-5, 15-11, but lost to Western State, 15-13, 15-3, 16-14.
....The tournament gave the Lady Wildcats a good chance to check out their young players before Lone Star Conference action begins Friday when they host Texas Woman's University.
