More than 450 cars are expected for the fourth annual Abilene
Shootout Drag Race today and Sunday at Abilene Regional Airport.
...Gates open at 8 a.m. and time trials start at 9 a.m. both days.
Admission is $10 for today and $12 for Sunday, or a two-day pass
is $20 which also includes a pit pass. There is a $3 pit pass
charge today and no pit pass charge on Sunday.
...."We had 450 cars last year and we're expecting close
to 500 cars this year," said Mike Dohrse, vice president
of Abilene Motor Sports Inc. "We'll have some of the fastest
street cars in America here."
....The cars will race on a -1/8-mile drag strip at the airport.
...."It'll be a spectacular event in that nobody in American
runs more than 400 cars over a two-day period," Dohrse said.
"What makes that possible is the tremendous number of volunteers
that help us."
....Dohrse said that 10 to 12 of the fastest street cars in the
United States will be on hand in addition to the regular entries
in the field.

in Abilene: Grant Teaff will be in Abilene the next four days
to participate in "Bridging the Great Divide,"a Fellowship
of Christian Athletes program. His regular work could be called
"Bridging the United States."
....The former Snyder High School football player and later head
football coach at McMurry University and Baylor University is
now the executive director of Football Coaches Association and
that takes him all over the country. He's also the national chairman
of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' board of directors.
....In fact, he will help conduct a campus wide church service
at McMurry Sunday morning, then fly to Chicago for a Monday meeting
with the athletic directors from NCAA Division I-A schools. He
had returned from a Chicago meeting Tuesday. In the near future,
he'll be attending a coaches convention in Orlando, Fla.

Win: Abilene High posted its second straight District 4-5A
victory over a team previously unbeaten in league play on Tuesday,
downing Odessa High 15-11, 15-10.
...."The girls came out fired up," said AHS head coach
Didi Pierce, whose Lady Eagles had a season-high 20 kills. "They
were building off the win Saturday (over Midland High). They were
pretty much determined that this year they are going to do something.
We improved a lot on our blocking."
....Kelly Armbruster paced the Lady Eagles in kills with eight,
and teammate April Letz added five. 20 kills as a team most all
season. Had eight aces as a team.
....The Lady Eagles, who are now 2-2 in district and 8-9 overall,
will play next on Saturday at home against Midland Lee starting
at 2:30 p.m.
....Odessa High is now 2-1 in district.

Permian: Cooper survived its first three-game match in district
play to beat Odessa Permian, 15-8, 13-15, 15-3, in volleyball
action at Cougar Gym.
....Cooper improved to 3-0 in District 4-5A and 11-8 overall while
Permian fell to 0-4 and 12-9 .
...."That third game was a wake-up call and we came back
and took control," Cooper coach Beth Wills said.
....Cooper recorded 36 kills as a team. Catherine Weir led the
way with 12 while Jessie Wise added 9 and Melisse Watkins had
6.
....Cooper's next match is Saturday at Midland High.

10 in NAIA Division II: Howard Payne jumped from ninth to
sixth in this week's NAIA Division II football poll after last
Saturday's 24-21 victory over Hardin-Simmons, while the Cowboys
fell from No. 5 to No. 10.
....Findlay, Ohio is still No. 1 in the rankings, and the No.
2 and 3 spots also remained unchanged with Western Washington
and Malone, Ohio. But Benedictine, Kan. moved up from sixth to
fourth and Sioux Falls, S.D. improved from No. 7 to No. 5.
....This Saturday, Howard Payne (2-0) will play in Alpine against
Sul Ross State and Hardin-Simmons (1-1) will play at McMurry.

students punished: Three Arlington High School football players
have been barred from playing in the school's homecoming game
this Friday and a wrestling team member will miss one meet after
admitting that they drank alcohol at a party where a 16-year-old
girl says she was sexually assaulted.
....The students' suspensions Monday from extracurricular activities
follow those of at least nine students who were barred from participating
in Arlington High's football game Saturday and were reinstated
to the team Monday by coach Bill Keith.
....The reinstated students, including two female trainers, served
the one-game suspension for drinking at the Sept. 13 party, school
district spokeswoman Charlene Robertson said.
....Ms. Robertson said nine players and the two trainers were
suspended and reinstated, but Keith said only seven players and
two trainers were involved.

requires surgery: Texas starting inside linebacker Dusty Renfro
will be out of action for a while after suffering a ligament tear
in his right thumb in the Notre Dame game.
....Head coach John Mackovic said Renfro, a sophomore who has
started all three games this season, requires surgery and will
miss two to four weeks following the procedure.

quarterback arrested: Houston Oilers reserve quarterback James
Ritchey is free on $500 bond after being arrested for public intoxication.
....Ritchey, a rookie third-string free agent with the Oilers,
was attending a charity barbecue over the weekend in Nacogdoches

quarterback last year for Stephen F. Austin.

Spring and Fall 3-day events. All events are sanctioned by the

20: John Estes threw for 440 yards with 6 touchdown passes
as Abilene Christian knocked off Cornerstone, the state's top-ranked
TAPPS team, 41-20 Saturday.
....After taking an early 12-0 lead, the Panthers saw the Eagles
score a touchdown with just 42 seconds left in the half. However,
ACHS then responded with a touchdown of their own, just 11 seconds
before the end of the half.
...."That was a huge touchdown," said ACHS coach Steve
Woods. "We had lost the momentum going into the half, and
with that score we took it back."
....Hauling in Estes' touchdown passes were Joe Rodriguez, who
caught 3 touchdowns in picking up 240 yards receiving, Lee Hedestream,
Paden Parker and Jason Strader.
Defensively, ACHS scored when John Williams picked up a fumble
and rumbled 25 yards for a score.

Team Skunks Lee: Cooper routed Midland Lee 18-0 Saturday in
a District 4-5A dual meet.
...."Quick and painless," CHS coach Jimmy Cole said.
"They went out there and took care of their business. Lee

...Baseball experts and former players on those teams say the
Texas Rangers' collapse-in-progress, if it continues, would stand
among the biggest in baseball history.
....Scarcely more than a week ago, on Sept. 11, the Rangers' AL
West lead over Seattle stood at nine games.

....That's what pitcher Ferguson Jenkins thought. He pitched for
the 1969 Chicago Cubs, who led the New York Mets by 9-1/2 games
on Aug. 14. Then the Cubs went 8-17 in September and lost the
divisional race to Tom Seaver's "Miracle Mets" by eight
games.
...."There's always one ballclub to go through it,"
Jenkins, now the Cubs' pitching coach, said Friday. "It's

....The Rangers, hoping for the first playoff berth in franchise

High Players Suspended: Seven Arlington High School football
players were suspended from Friday night's game after admitting
that they drank alcohol at a party at which a girl allegedly was
raped, the coach said.
....A 16-year-old Arlington High School student told police that
she was sexually assaulted at a party Sept. 13.
....Arlington police spokesman Dee Anderson said Friday that no
warrants had been issued nor arrests made.
....Superintendent Lynn Hale told school board members Thursday
about the rape allegation and the suspensions ordered by Arlington
head coach Bill Keith.

in the attack. None of the suspended players were identified.

....The American League's best hitting team got a combined four-hit
shutout from Jamie Moyer and Bobby Ayala as the Mariners defeated
the Texas Rangers 6-0 Monday night in the first of a four-game
series.
....Seattle pitchers have thrown 24 consecutive shutout innings.
It gave the Mariners back-to-back shutout victories for the first
time since April 27-28, 1993 against the Cleveland Indians.

Season: Abilene Christian University will open its 1996 fall

tie and rookie Jeff D'Amico pitched six strong innings as the
Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-3 Friday night.
....The Rangers, who lead the AL West by seven games over Seattle,
have lost three straight games for the first time since Aug. 1-3.

The North Mesquite Stallions upheld their No. 1 ranking in Class
5A Friday night, thumping second-ranked Odessa Permian 27-0 behind
a 78-yard touchdown run by Adrian Cox and two touchdown passes
by Will Overstreet.
....Just as impressive was the North Mesquite defense, which held
Permian to 85 total yards. The Mojo got only 17 yards in the third
quarter and were held to minus-2 yards in the fourth quarter.

says stadium decision near: Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane
said Friday that if he and Harris County can't agree on a stadium
deal this weekend he will ask baseball owners for permission to
negotiate with potential buyers who would move the team.
...."We made a lot of progress in the last two days, so we
hope we could reach some agreement in the next three days,"
McLane said in a telephone interview from Fort Worth, Texas. "I'm
very confident that we can. But if we can't, we would move forward."
....Among the issues still undecided, McLane said, is the amount
of money he would receive if the county were to reacquire his
lease at the county-owned Astrodome. He would not reveal any figures.
....The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that McLane wants about
$20 million for the lease to help him bridge an interim period
while he waits for a $265 million, 42,000-seat stadium with a
retractable roof to be built downtown.
....Harris County Judge Robert Eckels has not budged past $10
million for the lease, which runs through 2023, the newspaper
said.

both teams are coming off victories on Tuesday.
....Cricket Holt served nine aces in Cooper's 15-3, 15-4 win over
Lubbock Estacado, while Kelly Armbruster had six kills and three
aces in Abilene High's 17-15, 15-10 victory over Water Valley.

Dallas, 3-0, in soccer: Melanie Forster had two of Hardin-Simmons
three second-half goals in the Cowgirls' 3-0 soccer win over the
University of Dallas Friday at Shelton Stadium.
....The win improved HSU to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the American
Southwest Conference.
Jennifer Alford scored the other HSU goal while teammate Mandy
Melchor posted her second shutout of the season. Forster's goals
upped her season total to three.

go for second win: Abilene Christian University and Texas
A&M-Commerce, two teams which picked up their first league
wins Thursday, will meet today in Lone Star Conference women's
volleyball.
....ACU (2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference) will meet Texas
A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. at Lion Fieldhouse.
....Abilene Christian broke a four-match losing streak Thursday
with a four-game road win at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Also Thursday,
the Lady Lions took their first win of the season in a five-game
contest with winless Angelo State.
....Emily Hale, a junior hitter from McPherson, Kan., hit .348
with 21 kills for the Lady Wildcats in Thursday's win.

CC title: Abilene Christian University posted a near-perfect
winning total of 17 points in the women's division Friday in cruising
to the championship of the ACU cross country classic.
....The ACU men finished second with 36 points as they were edged
by South Plains College which had 35.
....ACU's Miranda Boonstra, Casi Florida and Vivian Ruijters finished
1-2-3. Former ACU runner Karen Vann was fourth and current ACU
runner Josie Martinez was fifth. Boonstra's winning time was 18:16.
....Musa Gwanzura of ACU claimed the men's title with a time of
19:50 and teammates Fallody Moonga and Thomas Korir were third
and fourth, respectively.

Giving Suites to Charity: The Houston Oilers, determined to
be good neighbors before officially arriving in Tennessee, have
donated 75 luxury suites to charity for the San Francisco game.

The money will go to the Clinic Bowl, which primarily funds the
Vanderbilt Hospital Physical Therapy Clinic.

Lead: The Texas Rangers matched the biggest lead in team history,
extending their edge in the AL West to eight games Monday night
with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
....Mickey Tettleton's go-ahead double in the sixth inning sent
the Rangers to their fourth straight victory. Texas, the only
team in the league that has never made the playoffs, also led
by eight games over Seattle on Aug. 25.
....Texas overcame a 3-0 deficit against Pat Hentgen (17-9), who
pitched his major league-leading 10th complete game. Hentgen struck
out 10, but the Rangers still beat Toronto for the seventh straight
time this season.

Better About Irish: Texas coach John Mackovic has barely looked
at Notre Dame's game tapes in preparation for the seventh-ranked
Longhorns' matchup with the Fighting Irish on Sept. 21.
....But already, Mackovic feels better about playing the Irish
after an off week than he did last year.
....That's because Mackovic had only four scholarship defensive
linemen with game experience - due to injuries - heading to South
Bend, Ind., last season to face a typically behemoth Notre Dame
offensive line.
....Those who did play ended up out of position, filling in for
the missing starters.

Bailey, a senior from Wylie, is one of four players honored as
American Southwest Conference players of the week.
....Bailey gained 116 yards on just six carries and scored three

of God College.
....He shared the offensive player of the week award with Sul
Ross State running back Jesse Lynch and Howard Payne wide receiver
Tyrone Brown.
....Lynch rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns in the Lobos'

scored on runs of 69, 2 and 67 yards n a 48-14 win Friday over
Midland Greenwood.
....- Defensive player of the week: Defensive back John Hernandez
of De Leon. He intercepted two passes and returned them 20 and
80 yards in a 21-0 win over Eastland. He broke up two other passes
and was in on seven tackles. Last year, Hernandez intercepted

....- Six-Man player of the week. Brookesmith back Eric Clawson

Milwaukee: Texas starter Bobby Witt weathered the rain delay
better than the Milwaukee Brewers' bullpen did.
....Witt stayed in the game after a 1:07 rain delay following
the second inning Sunday and finished with a five-hitter and Darryl
Hamilton, Mickey Tettleton and Juan Gonzalez homered as the Rangers
defeated Milwaukee 7-1.

Mark in LSC: Texas A&M-Kingsville was the preseason Lone

Saturday, and the Texas Rangers cut their magic number for winning
their first division title to 16 with a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee
Brewers.
....The Rangers took a seven-game lead in the AL West over Seattle,
which was rained out at Cleveland.
...Hill (15-8) won his fourth straight road decision, allowing
one run and three hits in 6 2-3 innings. Mike Henneman got two
outs for his 28th save.

on for Win: Two touchdown passes by Jeff Watson staked Baylor
to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter Saturday night
and the Bears held off Louisiana Tech 24-16.
....Jerod Douglas' 51-yard touchdown run expanded Baylor's lead
to 21-3 with 11:07 left in the third quarter and freshman Kyle
Atteberry's 39-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the game clinched
the Bears' season-opening victory after Tech (1-1) had closed

Redshirt freshman Jeff Dover passed for two touchdowns as
Texas Christian upset Oklahoma 20-7 Saturday, spoiling coach John
Blake's debut and breaking the Sooners' 13-year streak of season-opening
victories.
....TCU (1-0), which joined the Western Athletic Conference this
year and was a 9-1/2-point underdog, scored first when Michael
Reeder kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, capitalizing
on a fumbled punt return by Oklahoma's Rodney Rideau.

Lose: Arlington High School bounced Cooper out of the Arlington
volleyball tournament Saturday morning, scoring a 15-5, 15-9 victory.
...."We played well in some areas Friday, but we didn't play
very well against Arlington," coach Beth Wills said. "They
have a tough team, but we had some unforced errors that hurt us
(in the second game against Arlington).

SMU linebacker Craig Swann and quarterback Ramon Flanigan turned
the first half around in a few seconds, and then Flanigan threw
a screen pass for a touchdown early in the second half as the
Mustangs beat Arkansas 23-10 Saturday.
....Arkansas (0-1) was in position to expand a 10-7 lead when
Swann chased down quarterback Pete Burks, caused a fumble and
recovered it at the Mustangs 48.

finish sixth: The McMurry men finished sixth in the West Texas
A&M cross country meet Saturday as Fort Hays State swept both
divisions.
....McMurry had two women competing and former Abilene High runner
Jessica Thompson finished 25th and Janet Ramage 35. Fort Hays
scored 23 points to win the title and New Mexico Highlands was
second at 33.
....Fort Hays swept the first three individual places and scored
19 points to win the men's crown while Central Oklahoma was second
with 71 points. McMurry had 158 points.

Try for Berth: The Abilene Prairie Dogs will send unbeaten
Lance Schuermann to the mound Saturday at Scott Field to try to
close out Amarillo and earn a berth in the Texas-Louisiana League
Championship Series.
.....The Dogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series on
Thursday in Amarillo with a 7-4 victory over the Dillas.
.....A victory Saturday will put Abilene in the league Championship
Series against the winner of the Lubbock-Rio Grande Valley series.
A loss, however, would force a Game 3 Sunday night at Scott Field.

Opens at Home: The McMurry University Indians hope to give
Southwestern Assemblies of God College a rude welcome to the world
of college football.
....The Lions have been competing in football as a club sport
for the past several years, while the Indians will be using the
game as a tuneup for its American Southwest Conference opener
next Saturday at home against 12th-ranked Howard Payne.
....Coach Steve Keenum's Tribe will feature eight returning starters
on defense as the team tries to bounce back from losing 9 of 10
games a year ago.

OSU to Tangle: The coaches at Oklahoma State and Texas Tech
both believe the mistakes their teams made last week are correctable,
and that fans at Texas Stadium will see the results Saturday.
....Difference is, the Red Raiders are 0-1 after losing the first
Big 12 game, and the Cowboys are 1-0 after winning Division 1-A's
first overtime duel, albeit against a lightly regarded non-conference
opponent.
...."I would like to think that this team knows it can be
a better football team," OSU coach Bob Simmons said despite
a 23-20 victory over Southwest Missouri State last weekend. "I'm
hoping that that does happen, but we've got to go out and prove
that. We haven't proved that yet."
....The last time the teams squared off on neutral soil was 1988
in Tokyo, where OSU won a wild 45-42 offensive show. That was
an interleague game between Tech of the Southwest Conference and
OSU of the Big 8.

Get Medical Treatment: The Texas Rangers' flag is still flying
in their pennant race, despite getting slightly tattered with
a loss to the Minnesota Twins.
....Two players faced medical treatment Thursday following the
first-place Rangers' 7-6 loss that included Roger Pavlik's dispirited
pitching.
....Rusty Greer, who hit a two-run triple in the second inning
that made it 6-all, aggravated a rib cage injury while running
the bases and left the game.
....While X-rays were inconclusive, Greer faced a bone scan late
Thursday afternoon, said Rangers spokesman Charlie Green.
....The team said Greer could be out from two days to three weeks.
....The Rangers' troubles Wednesday night began even before the
game. Second baseman Mark McLemore fractured his jawbone after
he was struck in the face with a fungo bat swung by coach Bucky
Dent while jogging to the batting cage during practice. He was
scratched from the starting lineup, replaced by Rene Gonzales.

....Rich Becker's homer helped the Twins take an early 6-0 lead.
Juan Gonzalez hit his 42nd homer and Dean Palmer also homered
during Texas' six-run second inning that tied it.

View A&M football.
....The Panthers extended their losing streak to an NCAA-record
58 games Saturday in a 42-24 setback to Texas Southern at the
Astrodome.
....That in itself is bad. Tuesday, matters worsened for the Panthers.
....Head football coach and athletic director Hensley Sapenter
Jr. was suspended with pay pending a school investigation into
possible violations of NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference
rules.
....The allegations involve the use of ineligible players in the
loss to TSU.
September 4 - PDogs Beat Amarillo:
Lance Schuermann is still perfect, and the Abilene Prairie Dogs
are still in first place.
....Schuermann, working on three days rest for the first time,
worked all seven innings to earn the win Tuesday night in a 4-1
victory over Amarillo.
....It was the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Crutcher
Scott Field, which wrapped up the Texas-Louisiana League's regular-season
schedule.
....Schuermann is now 12-0 on the season after limiting the Dillas
to five hits in the seven-inning contest. He walked four and struck
out three.
....The Prairie Dogs moved to 31-16 in the second half of play.
Abilene, which won the first-half championship, entered the night
hoping to avoid playing a first-round playoff series. But they
had to win both games of the twinbill and hope Lubbock lost at
least one of its two games Wednesday night in Harlingen against
Rio Grande Valley.

Helling to Florida: Texas Rangers pitcher Rick Helling has
been sent to the Florida Marlins, completing the trade in which
the team acquired right-handed pitcher John Burkett. Rangers pitcher
Ryan Dempster also went to Florida in the deal.
....The Rangers announced Tuesday that they have activated pitcher
Chris Nichting from the 60-day disabled list and sent him to the
Oklahoma City 89ers, the Rangers' Triple A team.
....Another pitcher, Chris Curtis and outfielder Rikkert Faneyte,
both on option to Oklahoma City, have been assigned outright to
the 89ers.

in a 6-5 victory for the Abilene Prairie Dogs over Amarillo.
....The Prairie Dogs improved to 28-15 in the second half of play
as they stayed in first place ahead of Lubbock by one-half game.
Lubbock kept pace with its 6-2 win over Alexandria.
