Wylie golfers dominate Region I-3A tourney

ODESSA - Wylie captured all four major championships Tuesday at the Region I-3A golf tournament at the Ratliff Ranch Country Club.

The boys and girls easily won the team titles, and Jason Darby won the boys' individual medalist title, while Ashley Andress won the girls' medalist title.

The boys team followed up its first-round 315 by blistering the course for a second-round 298. The 613 total was good enough to win the team title by 11 strokes over Tulia, which shot a 303 on Tuesday.

It's Wylie's first boys regional title since 1989.

Now Wylie player shot worse than 77 and it Brandon Howard's 77 that was thrown out.
"The guys were unbelievable today," Wylie golf coach Terry Don Barrington said. "At worst, we would shot a 303 and still won the team title. I think that might have been our best round ever at regional."

The Wylie girls were just as impressive, shotting a final-round 339 to overcome a five-stroke deficit and beat Graham for the team title. The Lady Steers, who led after the first round, shot a 352 to finish second.

Wylie finished with a two-round total of 693, while Grahm shot a 701.
Andress followed up her opening-round 79 with an 80 on Tuesday to win the medalist title by three strokes over Tulia's Jaime Chapman. Wylie's Natalie Porter finished third in the medalist race with a 163 total.

"We got some solid rounds from the girls," Barrington said. "Jordan Bridwell came back and shot a 90 (after an opening-round 102), and that was a big turnaround. They were all thrilled, and so was I. Everybody on both teams did a good job of playing to win instead of playing not to lose."

The Breckenridge boys finished fourth in the team standings at 665, followed by Colorado City at 668.
The Comanche girls finished tied for fourth place in the team standings with Tulia at 764.
