Collectors recirculating valuable coins
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Handfuls of pennies, dimes and quarters
are more than pocket change to coin collectors, some of whom are
now giving up what they usually collect.
A 1914-D Lincoln penny is among thousands of dollars in valuable
coins destined for recirculation this week by coin clubs in Fort
Worth and across the nation.
About 2,500 coins will be recirculated by members of the Fort
Worth Coin Club, said Frank Provasek, a club member who runs Causey's
Coins in Haltom City.
The finder of the Lincoln penny, valued at $85, will get a
free club membership - plus an $84.99 windfall.
"We want to promote more interest in the coin collecting
hobby," said Ron Kersey, the club's vice president.
Recirculation of coins from members' private collections is
coinciding with National Coin Week, which runs through Friday.
All of the dimes, quarters and half-dollars will be pre-1965
- when the government stopped using silver - and worth at least
three or four times their face value, Kersey said.
The Lincoln penny is the most valuable single coin to be released
by the Fort Worth club.
Hours after coins are returned to circulation, they can be
thousands of miles away - changing hands dozens of times a day.
So infusing the currency system with valuable coins should
widely advance the coin collecting hobby.
The Fort Worth club will provide free coin collector starter
kits to children and teen-agers interested in learning about the
hobby.
"Many younger people have never seen Indian Head cents
or Buffalo nickels," Provasek said.
Kersey said coins are like small history books, providing insight
to the country's heritage.
Recirculating valuable coins has one drawback.
"It can get expensive," Kersey said.Send
