Legislature honors San Angelo author
Harte-Hanks Austin Bureau
AUSTIN - Western author Elmer Kelton of San Angelo was honored
Wednesday by the Texas Legislature with his own special day.
Lawmakers read resolutions and spoke of Kelton's contributions
to Texas.
"It's pretty heady stuff. I never expected to be standing
on the floor of the Legislature being honored like that,"
said Kelton, one of America's premier western novelists. "I
looked around to see if they were really surely saying all those
nice things about me.
"It's great for the ego," he said. "Of course,
I know better."
State Rep. Rob Junell said the praise and accolades given to
Kelton on Wednesday during "Elmer Kelton Day" were more
than deserved.
'I don't think we all realize what a treasure we have in Elmer
Kelton," Junell said.
In the House of Representatives, Junell read a resolution honoring
Kelton. A similar resolution was introduced in the Senate by state
Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock.
'Elmer Kelton has distinguished himself as one of the premier
storytellers of our time and his vivid tales of the winning of
the West are as typical of Texas tradition as cowboy songs and
cattle drives," read Duncan's resolution. "Elmer Kelton
has fired the imaginations and touched the hearts of readers around
the globe."
Kelton, 71, named the greatest Western writer of all time by
the Western Writers of America Inc., is a six-time winner of the
Spur Award for excellence in Western fiction and a three-time
recipient of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame's Western Heritage
Award.
After the ceremony, Kelton was honored at receptions and a
booksigning for his latest book, "Cloudy in the West,"
his 35th novel. Send
