Laredo United players reinstated
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Six Laredo United High School football
players who had been ruled ineligible because they allegedly moved
from Mexico for athletic purposes were reinstated Friday by the
University Interscholastic League's State Executive Committee.
The District 30-5A executive committee voted 5-1 Tuesday that
the six students were attending United for athletic purposes,
thus making them ineligible for all games they played and causing
United to forfeit those victories.
But on Friday, a panel of members representing the UIL State
Executive Committee met in San Antonio and overruled the district
committee.
"The students in question were being accused of moving
to the district for athletic purposes," said UIL spokeswoman
Rachel Hendrex. "They had all moved to Laredo from Mexico.
"But they all had legal guardianship papers, and basically
the State Executive Committee could not find sufficient evidence
that the students had moved for athletic purposes."
If the forfeit would have stood, Laredo United's 6-1 record
would have become 0-7. In district, the Longhorns would have fallen
from 4-0 -- tied for the lead with Laredo Nixon -- to 0-4.
Laredo United was scheduled to play Nixon at home on Friday
night.
Ms. Hendrex said the alleged violation had been reported by
other schools in Laredo United's district.
"There could possibly be some litigation in opposition
to the State Executive Committee's decision, but we don't know
yet," she said. "We hope not."
The players in question are the team's top offensive player,
quarterback Emmanuel Gomez; the top defensive player, defensive
back Ricardo Guizar; as well as running backs Pablo Hernandez
and Michael Quiroz and defensive backs Irving Ovalle and Vicente
Martinez.
Gomez, Guizar and Ovalle were on the team last season. Hernandez,
Quiroz and Martinez joined this season. All are seniors, except
Martinez, who is a junior.
