Unprecented matchup set up by accident
By The Associated Press
Recent history made Tyler John Tyler and La Marque an appealing
matchup when the schools' coaches agreed last year to a home-and-home
series. They ended up planning a marquee event that seems almost
too good to be true.
John Tyler will bring its No. 1 ranking in Class 5A to La Marque's
Etheredge Stadium on Friday night to play the No. 1 team in 4A.
Never before have the leaders of different classes squared off.
JT coach Allen Wilson and La Marque coach Alan Weddell were
just trying to fill out their non-district schedules for 1996
and 1997 when they spoke early last year about playing each other.
It wasn't surprising both teams had trouble finding opponents.
Tyler won a 5A state title in 1994 and was an 11-1 area finalist
in 1995 and La Marque was the 4A runner-up in 1994, then went
16-0 to win the title 1995.
Despite the 206-mile distance, it was too good of a match to
pass up.
John Tyler won Round One 22-0 on its home turf of Rose Stadium
last Sept. 28. Round Two comes Friday night.
Although schedules don't have to be put together for several
months, neither school is talking about another two-year deal.
Both coaches would rather wait until after realignment is announced
in February before searching for non-district games.
"You'd rather play somebody a little closer because of
travel," said Wilson, whose team planned to begin its 4-1/2-hour
bus ride early Friday. "But we'll have too see what the schedule
brings and go play it." Send a Letter to
