Palestine names Estes interim coach-athletic
director
PALESTINE, Texas (AP) -- Jack Estes has been named interim
head coach and athletic director at Palestine, replacing Rick
Langley, who resigned last week following the school board's reinstatement
of 11 players.
Langley's resignation was unanimously accepted by the school
board Monday night. The board also unanimously turned Langley's
duties over to Estes.
Langley went 25-22-1 since replacing Tom Wilson in 1993. This
year's team is 1-6 and 0-4 in district.
Langley was seriously injured in an August 1994 auto accident
and missed that entire season. The team, however, went 11-1 and
earned its first playoff berth since 1986.
Langley gave up his job after the school board decided that
running back Larry Joe Williams, defensive back Johnny Anthony
and slotback Aaron Johnson could rejoin the team on Nov. 1.
Langley had permanently suspended that trio two weeks earlier
for violating team rules, leading to protests that the punishment
was too severe.
Eight other players who had not reported to practice since
the suspensions also were reinstated over Langley's objections.
Football player Rogerick Gill, speaking on behalf of the team
at Monday night's board meeting, said the school board was wrong
to overrule the coaches.
"They give the coaches the power of discretion, but yet
they go back and say ÔThe things that you have done are
too harsh.' Who's to say what's too harsh and what's not?"
Gill said.
