Pavlik's walks - was it a record?
By RONALD BLUM AP Sports Writer
When the Rangers' Roger Pavlik walked the first four Toronto
batters on April 18, Texas said it was an American League record.
According to the record book published by The Sporting News,
it is. Elias Sports Bureau, baseball's statisticians, said it
could not confirm it. And Hall of Fame baseball writer Leonard
Koppett questioned whether anyone could definitively say Pavlik
was the first AL pitcher to walk his first four batters.
The reason: play-by-plays are missing for many games in the
19th century and the early 20th century.
"I suspect that when researchers go back on this stuff,
they find the best figure they can," said Craig Carter, editor
of TSN's record book. "They say, we're going to list it and
they say if you have something better, show me and show me proof."
So if anyone does have proof that an AL pitcher started a game
with more walks, please come forward. Send a Letter to
