Greenhill hits quirk in playoff system
DALLAS (AP) -- The Greenhill Hornets have hit a dilemma with
their Friday night football game against arch-rival St. Mark's.
If Greenhill wins, the season is over. If the Hornets lose they
can go into the post-season playoffs.
Greenhill competes in the Southwest Preparatory Conference,
a league consisting of 11 private schools divided into North and
South zones. The North Zone, which includes Greenhill and St.
Mark's, features one district with five schools, but the South
Zone separates its six schools into Division I for big schools
and Division II for schools with smaller enrollments.
The North Zone champion plays in the SPC Division I championship
game and the fourth-place team plays in the Division II championship
game. Since the North's Division II opponent is a smaller school,
league officials believed the fourth-place team would provide
a more competitive game. That leaves the second- and third-place
finishers out of the post-season. That would also leave fourth-place
Greenhill in the playoffs, if it loses on Friday.
Nevertheless, the Hornets will try to beat St. Mark's.
"We're totally focused on beating St. Mark's," said
John Calce, Greenhill's coach. "A victory would be better
than winning an SPC Championship."
Greenhill has never beaten St. Mark's.
