Clemens controls tempo for 8-1 Jays' win
TORONTO (AP) - Roger Clemens became the American League's first
nine-game winner, allowing four hits in seven innings Monday night
to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the Texas Rangers, 8-1.
Clemens (9-0) gave up one run, struck out seven and walked
four, lowering his league-leading ERA to 1.81. His best start
was 14-0 in 1986.
Toronto's offense, which has struggled all season, matched
its season high in runs - doing it in the first two innings -
and hits (13).
Ruben Sierra went 3-for-3, and Ed Sprague and Orlando Merced
homered.
Juan Gonzalez hit his eighth homer in the fourth. Paul Quantrill
followed Clemens with one-hit relief.
Rangers starter Julio Santana (2-2) gave up eight runs - seven
earned - and 12 hits in six innings. The Rangers, who gave up
13 runs to the Detroit Tigers Sunday, have allowed 62 runs in
their last nine games.
Toronto took a 4-0 lead in the first on Merced's solo homer,
Sierra's RBI single and Alex Gonzalez' two-run single with two
outs.
Sprague hit his ninth homer to make it 6-0 with two outs in
the second, Sierra hit an RBI triple and another run scored on
a fielding error by shortstop Benji Gil.Send a Letter to
