McDonald visits Austin, says he's undecided
about future
AUSTIN (AP) - Darnell McDonald, considered one of the nation's
best two-sport high school stars, says he will wait to see if
the Baltimore Orioles make him a better offer before he commits
to enrolling at Texas.
McDonald, appearing in Austin Wednesday with his father, Donzell,
made more of a statement by having a press conference than by
anything he said during it.
"The Orioles can think whatever they want about me being
in Austin today," Darnell McDonald said when asked whether
the media event was a bargaining tool. "Right now, I'm preparing
to play football this fall at the University of Texas."
The 18-year-old running back and center fielder from Englewood,
Colo., was the 26th pick in baseball's amateur draft.
Other first round picks have signed for as much as $875,000,
but McDonald said such a figure "was out of the question."
McDonald wouldn't confirm reports that he turned down a $2
million offer from Baltimore.
"There's more to life than money," said McDonald,
who added that his trip to Austin was to show his father the UT
campus. "I would enjoy playing football and baseball at Texas."
McDonald said he expects the Orioles to be in touch with his
adviser, Jeff Moorad, in the next couple weeks.
McDonald said if there wasn't an attractive offer by Aug. 10
- the day UT freshmen report to football practice - he would be
committed to a two-sport career at Texas. He declined comment
on his asking price. Send
