EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Michael Perry scored three touchdowns, the last with 1:24 to play, to lead Rice to a 40-34 victory over Northwestern on Saturday.

Perry had 19 carries for 104 yards and two TDS and also caught a 44-yard scoring pass from Chad Nelson.

Nelson rushed for 178 yards on 26 carries in Rice's option offense.

With 6:34 left to play and the scored tied at 34, Rice started from its 23 with Rodd Newhouse gaining 13 yards. The Owls held the ball until Perry's touchdown with 1:24 remaining.

Northwestern (2-2) took over with 1:17 left and got to the Rice 36 before being stopped with 37 seconds left.

The Wildcats trailed 34-24 entering the fourth quarter, but drove 80 yards on six plays to get to 34-31. The highlight of the drive was a 35-yard pass from Tim Hughes to Brian Musso. Two plays later, a pass interference call against LaDouphyous McCalla gave the Wildcats a first down on the 12. Adrian Autry scored two plays later from the 10 with 12:55 left.

The Wildcats forced a punt, which Musso returned 48 yards to the Owls 29. But Rice held and Brian Gowins kicked a 47-yard field goal at 6:47 to tie the game.

Northwestern opened the scoring on the first of Hughes' two TD passes, a 46-yarder to Musso in the first quarter.
