Ripken on DL, Frias recalled; Devereaux released
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - A week after becoming the Texas Rangers
starting shortstop, Billy Ripken has been placed on the disabled
list with a herniated disk in his lower back that could sideline
him up to six weeks.
Ripken went on the 15-day DL effective Wednesday. Infielder
Hanley Frias was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace
him.
Ripken was hurt Tuesday night while running the bases against
Colorado. An MRI and examination with the team's spine consultant
Drew Dossett revealed a herniated disc in the lower back. He was
given an injection and must rest for several days before beginning
rehabilitation.
Ripken, who was hitting .306 with two home runs and 20 RBIs
in 40 games, is expected to be out 4-6 weeks. Benji Gil, who lost
the starting shortstop job because of inconsistent hitting and
fielding, becomes the starter again.
In 67 games as the starter in Oklahoma City, Frias was hitting
.289 with five homers and 26 RBIs.
Texas also announced Thursday that outfielder Mike Devereaux
refused an assignment to Oklahoma City and was given his unconditional
release. He had been designated for assignment last Thursday after
hitting .208 with seven RBIs in 29 games this season. He was signed
as a free agent in January. Send
