McCombs pledges $3 million for Texas women's athletics

AUSTIN (AP) - Former San Antonio Spurs owner and car dealer Red McCombs and his wife Charline announced a matching-funds pledge of $3 million to the University of Texas intercollegiate athletics fund-raising campaign.

The gift is designated for women's athletics and includes $2 million for athletic facilities enhancement and a $1 million endowment for women's softball scholarships. Texas softball is competing in its first season as an NCAA Division I team.

The gift is contingent up on the women's athletic department raising $6 million. The couple says it will donate $1 for every $2 raised by UT women's athletics, with a maximum gift of $3 million. McCombs does not foresee a smaller donation.

"We're not going to cross that bridge because it's not going to happen," said McCombs, who also pledged to help the athletics department find other donors.

The donation is part of the Longhorn Legacy $30 million campaign for men's and women's intercollegiate athletics. The campaign, which began last September, is to provide long-lasting benefits to athletics through endowments, facility construction and other long-lasting projects.

"This is a truly magnificent and timely gift that further strengthens the University's commitment to its intercollegiate sports programs for women," said University of Texas President Robert Berdahl.

Jody Conradt, women's athletic director and head basketball coach, said the gift establishes a benchmark in private support for the school's athletics program for women, which fields 11 teams.

"Everyone associated with UT athletics is grateful to the McCombses and also enthusiastically welcomes the challenge of securing matching funds from others who are deeply care about providing athletic and academic opportunities for young men and women at the collegiate level," Conradt said.Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
