With Rice off, SMU carries banner for Texas' WAC schools

By The Associated Press

Neither an overpowering headwind nor the favored Wyoming Cowboys could suppress upset-minded Southern Methodist.

When Chris Sanders found Tony Newsome for a 22-yard touchdown pass against a stiff breeze, SMU sealed a 22-17 fourth quarter victory against the same Wyoming team that mauled the Mustangs 59-17 last year.

Roy Rios kicked field goals of 52, 39 and 30 yards in the third quarter for SMU (3-4, 2-2 Western Athletic Conference), which sits a game behind Brigham Young and Rice in the Mountain Division.

BYU held its ground with a 31-10 victory over winless Texas Christian (0-7, 0-44). Rice (5-2, 3-1) and Texas El-Paso (2-5, 1-3) had the weekend off.

Utah defeated New Mexico 15-10 in the only other Mountain result. A severe snowstorm postponed Tulsa's game at Colorado State.

In Pacific Division games, San Diego State beat Hawaii 10-3, Fresno State defeated Nevada-Las Vegas 46-28 and San Jose State edged Air Force 25-22.

SMU coach Mike Cavan didn't sound surprised that the only team to score into the wind won the game.

"It was an awful wind," he said. "I've never seen a wind quite that effective on a football field."

In Provo, Utah, freshman quarterback Drew Miller revived a once-proud BYU offense with three TD passes to demolish a 3-3 tie at intermission and extend the Horned Frogs' miserable season.

"We felt good about the situation at halftime," coach Pat Sullivan said. "We just weren't able to stop them."

Albeit briefly, TCU held a lead beyond the first quarter for the first time this season. They might have widened it if not for a fumbled goal-line leap by LaDainian Tomlinson in the second period.

Photo evidence showed Tomlinson might have had possession when he crossed the goal line. The officials ruled otherwise.Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
