Williams making run at rare NCAA rushing, scoring
double
AUSTIN (AP) - With one game left, Texas running back Ricky
Williams is in solid position to become the 24th player to lead
the nation in rushing and scoring.
Williams leads Tavian Banks of Iowa by 145 yards for the rushing
title. Banks goes against Minnesota, the nation's 39th-ranked
rush defense (132.5 yards per game), on Saturday in the Hawkeyes'
season finale.
Texas plays at Texas A&M on Nov. 28. The Aggies are ranked
48th (142.9 yards).
Williams ran for 211 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-31
victory over Kansas on Saturday but lost his position as the nation's
leading scorer to UCLA's Skip Hicks, who had four TDs against
Washington.
Hicks has 144 points, four more than Williams.
With his 211-yard rushing performance, his sixth 200-yard game
of the season, and three catches for 21 yards, Williams moved
into second place in all-purpose yardage (rushing, receiving and
punt and kick return yards).
Earl Campbell is the last Longhorn to lead the nation in rushing
and scoring, averaging 158.8 yards and 10.4 points per game in
1977. Williams is averaging 171 yards rushing and 14 points per
game.
The last player to lead in rushing and scoring was Colorado's
Rashaan Salaam in 1994. Send
