Tiger needs another strong comeback
Woods is 6 shots behind leaders
Associated Press
SAN DIEGO The streak lives. No, not that one.
Tiger Woods once again will have to conjure up another heroic
weekend in the Buick Invitational to win his seventh straight
PGA Tour victory. More important Friday was keeping alive his
tour-leading streak of making 46 consecutive cuts.
In jeopardy of missing only the second cut of his career, Woods
made five birdies and a sensational par save on the back nine
that gave him a 5-under par and two more days to catch up with
Phil Mickelson, Kirk Triplett and Shigeki Maruyama.
Mickelson chipped in for birdie on his last hole at Torrey
Pines South for a 67, putting him at 11-under 133 with Triplett
and Maruyama, who each had 8-under 64s.
Mickelson is a San Diego native who won this tournament in
1993 and knows Torrey Pines better than anyone. And yet, his primary
focus going into the weekend was on a player six strokes down
the leaderboard.
Sandy Lyle, who won the Masters and British Open before Woods
was in high school, was at 134 after a bogey-free 66, followed
by Bradley Hughes.
First-round leader Davis Love III was cruising along on the
easier North course until a double bogey on the par-3 sixth hole
wrecked his round. He finished with a 71 and was three strokes
back at 136.
LPGA-LA Championship
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. Laura Davies loves a good bet, so
she couldnt resist the gamble of having lasik eye surgery
less than 24 hours before playing in the LPGA Los Angeles Womens
Championship.
I took a chance and it paid off, she said after
shooting a bogey-free 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead in Fridays
opening round. The way I putted and chipped was the best
I have in a long time. I can see to the green where before it
was a bit of a guess.
The English star birdied three of the first nine holes, including
a chip-in from 35 feet on the par-4, 371-yard 4th. She used a
9-iron to get within 20 feet and then birdied the par-4, 346-yard
14th.
Laura Philo, Moira Dunn and Janice Moodie of Scotland were
tied at 68 after each had six birdies and two bogeys over the
6,222-yard Wood Ranch Golf Club course.
Sherri Steinhauer, a two-time winner last year, led a group
of six at 69 in cold, overcast conditions. The course was wet
from a soaking rain Thursday and more rain was forecast overnight.
ACE Group Classic
NAPLES, Fla. Lanny Wadkins, the 21-time PGA Tour winner
making his Senior PGA Tour debut, shot a 7-under-par 65 to move
within a stroke of the leaders in the ACE Group Classic.
Dana Quigley and Jim Thorpe shared the first-round lead, shooting
64s on the Pelican Marsh course.
