Santa, read this

The Taylor Jones Humane Society and the Abilene Animal Shelter will join forces again this year in the 18th annual Christmas For Animals.

This is a special opportunity for Big Country residents to give a loving home to an adoptable pet.

To adopt a pet during the holidays, come by the Human Society office, 3811 N. 1st St., suite A, for an application and screening. Hours have been extended to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

When you are accepted as a new owner, you can choose your pet from those at the Humane Society or the Animal Shelter.

Donations are also always welcome. To make a donation to support the groups, send your check to TJHS, P.O. Box 3271, Abilene 79604.

Thinking ahead

Tickets are on sale for the annual Martin Luther King Dinner at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Abilene Civic Center, 1100 N. 6th St.

In keeping with the theme of this year's dinner, "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On ... Not a Day Off," members of the city's Human Relations Committee, which sponsors the event, are urging citizens to spend the day taking action and volunteering to help others in the community.

As part of the service aspect, local performing artists will donate their time to provide multicultural entertainment for the annual dinner.

Tickets for the dinner are available in tables of 10.

No reservations will be taken, or tables held, without payment. Cash or checks will be accepted for payment. Ticket prices are as follows: gold table for $180; silver table for $170; bronze table for $160; individual seating for $16.

Tickets can be purchased in the city manager's office, second floor of City Hall, 555 Walnut St.

A reservation form is also available online at www.abilenetx.com. The form may be printed and mailed, with payment (please do not send cash in the mail) to: MLK Dinner, City Manager's Office, P.O. Box 60, Abilene 79604.

A seating chart is also available online.

Miracle Network

Several local restaurants are helping area children this holiday season. They are asking patrons to add a dollar to each entrée to support Children's Miracle Network.

Through the end of December these restaurants are offering this opportunity: Alley Cats, Bogie's, Becker's Loft, Cahoot's, Chili's Grill & Bar, Cypress Street Station, Dos Amigos, El Centro Cafe, El Fenix Cafe, Harlow's, Harold's Pit Bar-B-Q, Lytle Land & Cattle Co, Ruby's Chicken Dinner House, Spaghetti Warehouse, Spano's Trattoria and Szechuan Chinese Restaurant.
